Hi Guys and Dolls!!
I’m having a doozie of a problem here and I’m really to stoo-pid to figure it out. First let me lay out my machine. I have a AMD 64 3500+ processor running at 2199mhz and 2gb memory. I have win xp sp2 build 5.1.2600. My problem is I bought a used ipod for my young grandson who for some reason desperately wanted one but is too young for me to squander $200. bucks on one that he’ll probably lose in 6 mos. If he does do well with this then maybe I’ll save up and spoil him with a video one for next xmas. But I digress. For some reason I cannot install itunes on my computer. I’m going directly from the disk which is in good shape, I’ve checked my hi-speed usb ports, I’ve turned off McAfee virus protection when installing, I can’t figure it out. Error codes reads as follows:· Error 1406- Could not write value to key\ software\classes\.ccda\open with list\itunes.exe. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel. · Error 1402- Could not open key; Hkey_local_machine\software\classes\.ccda\open with progids. Contact your support personnel. · Error 1603- Fatal error during installation. Consult windows installer help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more help. My poor aged brain just went Huh?? I've got to run out and find a replacement present for Devin but please help if possible and I'll try anything you have. I don’t know if I’m posting this in the right place but if anyone has a solution I would dearly appreciate it. Thanks!! J4 |

Re: Crying on Xmas. Can't Install
The first thing that comes to mind is to make sure the account you are using is an administrator account.
Alternatively, have you tried downloading the iTunes program from their website?

Re: Crying on Xmas. Can't Install
Hi elf!!
Thanks for answering . Yes, I'm the administrator on the account and I have access to everything, I just don't know what to do with it! On the iTunes website it states that if I have newer ipod I can download and install iTunes 7 something but for older models that came with a cd I would have to install from the cd. J4 |

Re: Crying on Xmas. Can't Install
PS.
Just for kicks I tried to download and install iTunes 7.5 for the newer ipods and I recieved the same error message 1406. In fooling around with the ipod I found a page with model numbers. The info is as follows; 20 gb, version 3.1.1, model#m928211, Format-windows. Don't know if it helps, but can't hurt, eh? As I've said, "I know NOTHING about ipods! J4 |

edit: be careful, instructions involve editing the registry and this can be dangerous if you edit the wrong entry. If you have any questions, ask before proceeding.

Re: Crying on Xmas. Can't Install
To Elf,
Thanks for the help you gave me. Last time I wrote with my problem about not being able to install itunes was just before Xmas. I had to leave town very early the morning of the 26th for the house in the mountains that received extensive damage xmas night and being that all repairs must be done by myself, (I live on a small disability pension) I've just returned Jan.09th. I applied your fix and everything is working perfectly. So again, thank you so much for your help!! J4 |
