ok, heres the thing. this morning i got on the computer (xp home) from sleeping in half the day away and suddenly zone alarm starts bringing up all these new programs that want to acess the internet. and then avg starts saying i have a new virus, one after another.
so i run avg and adaware and take out like the 70ish new files. for some reason though avg didnt find anything (even though it told me about the new viruses) so then i desided to do some windows updates. after working around behind the constant "get sevice pack 2!" stuff (havent gotten it yet because ive been hearing nothing but bad news) i noticed that i missed about 8 important secrutity patches. so i install and update them and then it asks "would you like to restart your computer now?" i figured, "ok, everything seems to be fine now" so i clicked yes. so my computer starts to restart and doesnt get very far (only to the intel processor screen) then i get "no signal" on the screen and it all starts over. and then it just keeps looping over and over. the night before i didnt even do anything. i got off from playing final fantasy 11, and then started to work on some animations of mine. and then around 12 at night i went to bed... it was weird though because my comp didnt want to shut down right away like usual. i would list the names of the viruses avg stated and the new programs that zone alarm mentioned, but it all kind of happened to fast. i tried starting up in safe mode, but it does the same thing. please help, theres important files that i need to get back that are on my comp. |

most of the time your RAM is checked in the post screen after the CPU. If it cannot pass the ram tests then you may have lost some ram. Open her up and check all your connections and re-seat your cards and Ram. If you can get into the bios and check things out there. It could also be the processor or Mobo but usually you wont see anything. Since you freeze before anything boots it may not be the OS.

ok i got my computer back up and running. it was a virus. (dont know what one yet, still scanning)
what i did was i went into the bios and switched the boot order so that the dvd rom drive would boot up before the c drive(since the c drive was pretty unresponsive, it seemed to be what was causeing the problem). then i used the restore disk that came with my comp and booted up with that. restored some windows files or something and then was able to log on. right now im doing tons of virus scans from different sites and programs. thanks for your help and ideas on different aproaches on how to fix this. later |
