I bought a brand new laptop in January, a HP6000 series. I noticed a few days after I got it, that I got the blue screen of death(BSD), I was using files from external hard drive which I had previously used on my old laptop, which this problem never occured. I didnt think anything of it, and just restarted the computer. I am currently in the Marines and deployed, so I have no tech support. In the last week, every time I play MP3 files I get BSD, I am able to play video from the c: and f: drives, and do every other action without a problem. I scanned for viruses and spyware, and took care of those using StopSign Anti-Virus. Now I still am getting the BSD from MP3 files, within 10 minutes of play, and win32k.sys shows up in the message. I'm not very computer literate with programming, what is this file, and what steps can I take to correct it without reformating the hard drives?

Re: "blue screen of death" win32k.sys
When you get the blue screen, be sure to post the technical details on the blue screen including the STOP error. Write it down and post it back here so we can pinpoint the cause of the problem.

Re: "blue screen of death" win32k.sys
OK, thanks, I'll check it out later, in the mean time, I was talking to a guy who knows a good deal about computers, and he said it sounds like I may have gotten a faulty audio card, does that makes sense if I'm still able to watch and listen to videos, its just mp3's that cause it?

Re: "blue screen of death" win32k.sys
I have never seen a faulty sound card in a laptop at all let alone one that would cause a BSOD.

Re: "blue screen of death" win32k.sys
I performed a virus sweep on my computer, and got a few more "potentials". I hooked up some external speakers, and played it for a few hours trying to get BSOD, but I wasnt getting it. I tried having the computer all the way up, and had it set low, it never seemed to make a difference before. Is it possible that the virus scan took care of the problem?

Re: "blue screen of death" win32k.sys
That is very possible. Post back with the technical details if you see it again.
