Re: Xp Os Format

Not sure if i'm stating the obvious here but:
You can Format not reformat without a disk by going to the command prompt (Start>>Run, type cmd and hit return) and type format c:

Before you do that however, phone up however supplied you with your laptop and ask them what needs to be done to get a new cd. They will probably ask for a number of cd-keys and numbers, so be prepared to be on the phone for a while!

Hope i helped a bit,

Nappymonster

EDIT: I forgot to mention that they may charge you for the disk, but it's money well spent.

Re: Xp Os Format

After re-reading your post do you mean:

a CD to boot from or a drive to put the CD into?

Re: Xp Os Format

Key gens are illegal though, and many are not actually key gens - just hidden trojans etc (unless it is just a webpage with 123-4567-89 written on it). And as CD-keys are registered through the net, the chances are someone else will have gotten there first with that key.

Re: Xp Os Format

Hi and welcome,
You can format it, but if you don't have a working OS disk you will just have a formated hard drive without an operating system, which is of no use. Also, there are viruses that reside in memory, so formating might not even take care of the issue. Why don't you do a post in the HJT forum?

Re: Xp Os Format

I saw the post you posted there. You need to follow the five steps and post a hijack this log. They will not be able to help you with a hard drive issue. They will help you remove your malware. Sorry for not being very clear on that.

Re: Xp Os Format

That's Ok. Wouldn't you rather just get rid of the malware?
Here is how to do it from Toshibas site:

Towards the bottom of the link shows you how to boot from the disk and do it.
