[SOLVED] Movie Maker Probs
I'm trying to capture a movie from my Canon DV Camera using a PCI Firewire port.
The video is about 30 minutes long and takes up makes my system run really slow. I'm creating it as "recommended for viewing on my pc" so its about 120mb After about 3 minutes of capture the clips become jumpy and unusable - When viewed on the camera they are fine. This is the process info when capturing (attached) The Movie Maker got to about 48,000k before I killed it and the system became stable again (firefox is using 47,000) Can you suggest something to improve this - Nothing else is running and it always worked fine in the past. I recently did the following cleanups http://www.techsupportforum.com/articles-tutorials-reviews/windows-pc-software-articles/132836-getting-most-out-your-windows-xp-based-system-optimisation.html Last edited by Kgkev : 07-02-2007 at 03:44 PM. |

Re: Movie Maker Probs
Hi Kgkev
48MB is very normal for it, infact on mine it uses 63MB by default. The CPU usage looks low there, 30%, which for videoing isn't high. Usually you could be hitting 60% and your system would indeed be slower. What I have to ask is, why is there 900MB of RAM being used up and by what exactly? Can you give us a screenshot of the processes tab when it slows down please. It seems you have 512MB RAM installed and a very large pagefile? It also seems as your file is growing in size into the pagefile, the system is becoming choppy. If you're over 512MB usage, your system would grind to slugs pace when needing the pagefile. |

Re: Movie Maker Probs
The page file was changed to that size as recommended in the link in my first post.
It seems strange that it uses the page file as the system doesn't get to 512MB (as far as I can see) I have taken screens shots at various stages and the Ram gets upto 222,000 which should still be OK as I have 512mb Should I remove the page file? Can I change it so it doesn't get used until the system runs out of actual memory? hover over the attachments to see the file name and the recording time as they don't appear to have uploaded in the right order Last edited by Kgkev : 07-03-2007 at 01:41 PM. |

Sorry Kgkev. I'm away from home on work in a different nation, and my OS keyboard has stopped working here, so I couldn't look into any matter or reply. Further, the screen is only appearing at 640x480 16-bit resolutions, so I have much trouble elsewhere to take care of meanwhile, first and foremost my work and the computer. There are many "free-er" daily members on here, I'm sure someone kind enough would help when they see the thread when I can't get back. (if they can).

But Moviemaker was only acquiring 57% of your CPU usage and 3% to Windows Explorer - where was the rest of the 17% going? (unseen in the image). Also can you expand the window down (drag it down) and then take a screenshot so that we can see all/most of the processes please. As yet, there are many not observable in the images. When you run such heavy applications, such as video editing on those system specs, you really needn't have anything other running for it to run adequately. You need to have the very minimum extra's running. Extra's such as Firefox, AOL, Hello, MSPaint and Cobian. Depending on the movie size, 200MB RAM usage by Moviemaker is nothing unusual at all. By time, it will grow in size along with the growth of the file size. The minute you close it, all will go back to normal in an adequate system. Again, at the 4 minute interval, your RAM usage for moviemaker is 178MB and total RAM usage is 552MB. This is expected. Mine go over the 1.5GB barrier when during movie recording and editing playback. However, you have 25% CPU usage by Moviemaker and the rest, apart from 5%, is not visible in the screen capture. What was using up the 32%/62% CPU usage at that time? The Performance tab shows that your CPU usage is 81% which is high. Your RAM usage is 549MB 'current' but the peak RAM usage in the session (since you started) was 690MB - the page file usage is at 54MB. Later, Moviemaker gets to 222MB of RAM usage - again, this is nothing unusual at all for such applications, but you have 48%/71% CPU usage by Moviemaker, but no sign of what else is using the rest of the 23%. This is what we need to capture. In short, there is no way to "movie make" with little or below 1GB of RAM - it is very troublesome. But you also have many other applications opened, which is exasperating the situation. Click on the 'CPU' label bar under Processes to sort the items by CPU usage. When you have the highest users at top in descending order, take a screenshot and attach it back please. Also, run another test by closing everything but Moviemaker and the security software/s. Then see how the capturing goes. Be sure to post back if you have any queries. ![]() |

Re: Movie Maker Probs
OK closed everything I new was OK - Please suggest anything else I can kill without stopping the system
I didn't run out of ram this time - maxed at about 400MB Still jumps after about 3 minutes I've attached a full list of process and the graph showing the rise to 400MB - Then it stayed constant. I've always had 512Mb of ram and never had problems with movies before - even when continuing using the system. I have 11GB of home movies (some using a whole 1 hour tape) that don't have this problem. |

I have seen capture start stuttering after a while, but the file turns out ok . . have you looked at the file it captured to see how it plays?

Re: Movie Maker Probs
Have you tried searching for the latest motherboard drivers?
The PCI and chipset drivers will make a notable difference, especially. Make sure the PCI frequency is not overclocked (increased) in the BIOS (at default values). |

Re: Movie Maker Probs
List your complete system specs, including your temps while playback time.
Run Memtest to check your existing memory, and consider adding another 512 stick. What antivirus/malware programs are running on your system? Try StartupList : Its a tool that lists all and every auto starting program on your system. You might be surprised what it finds, this is way better than Msconfig. Commonly used to troubleshoot malfunctioning systems, trojan/viral infections, new spyware/malware breed ect.. STARTUPLIST

Re: Movie Maker Probs
I don't see many problems there at all. You can stop OUTLOOK.EXE, aolsoftware.exe, AOLSP Scheduler.exe, Cobian.exe, cbInterface.exe, AOLAcsd.exe and jusched.exe from running as they are unnecessary and then give it a try.
What did you get with Memtest? |

Re: Movie Maker Probs
To make a CD is easier.
Download the Memtest ZIP file, extract and burn the ISO image file onto a CDR/CDRW using something like Nero Burning Rom/ISO Burner/ImgBurn. Then you reboot with the CD inside the drive, press F8 on POST and change the first boot drive to CD-ROM. Memtest86+ should then run by itself. |
