Ok before I do this will I be able to click on them again if I want them to start up? Also I have Regcure which cleans my registry, it has a manage startup feature which you can go in and disable what you want at startup time. What about using this instead?
Registry "clean-up" programs are responsible for a lot of problems, and may-well be the ultimate cause of your problem.

Yes, you will be able to turn these features back on.

Re: Windows update

Ok, thank you all, followed instructions and seems to be starting up faster than before. Now when I started this post I had problems with auto updates. That has been fixed too (THANK YOU VERY MUCH) but still one little problem. I had the 60 day trial for microsoft office 2003 and one note, my 60 days are up and I don't wish to continue using them at this time. I still get updates every time I go online which fail to install. Would I be better off removing these programs or can I prevent these updates from trying to install every time?

Re: Windows update

I have never used the "trial version" of MS Office, and am surprised that it is trying (and failing) to update it past the trial's expiration.

I would think that it wouldn't work at all. If the thing still works past the 60 days, and you want to keep using it, it seems that there ought to be a place in Office where you can turn the auto-update feature off. Look for it, and you should be able to find it.

However, if it isn't working at all, and only wants to update itself so that you can't use it after you can't update it (which sounds kinda dumb to me) then it seems that the obvious thing to do is uninstall it.

In fact, it's always a good idea to uninstall any program that isn't useful or being used. You can do this via Add/Remove Programs.

But back to your main problem, selectively turning off the programs wasn't the "fix", it is a way to identify which programs are causing unusual delay during start.

The whole idea is to turn things on & off until you figure out what is causing the problem. Then usually what you do is uninstall that (bad) program and reinstall it and see if it loads faster than it did before.

Maybe the best thing here is for you to install a program called " Belarc Advisor" and attach (don't post) it's report here so that we can look at what you have installed, and also what your system resources are. It may be that your computer simply isn't able to run everything you have installed.

Re: Windows update

Tried to remove ms office from list of programs and got this. Error 1316
Setup cannot read from file C:\windows\installer\std11n.msi. Check your connection to the network or cd-rom drive. For other potential solutions to this problem see C:\program file\microsoft office\office11\1033\setup.chm.
I ran belarc advisor and tried to attach the file to this post but it does not like the format.

Re: Windows update

The forum software probably does not like the ".HTM" (HTML) format, but you can ZIP the HTML page of the report and then attach it, or you can have Belarc output a TXT file which will attach without needing to ZIP it first.

If the uninstaller for XP Office is bad, you are going to need to uninstall it manually. I'm curious as to how the uninstaller got corrupted; have you had a malware infection ?

Give me a bit, and I'll go try to find manually uninstallation instructions for Office XP.

EDIT***

Okay, uninstalling Office manually is a bit more complex than I thought. Please post the exact version you are using and also where you downloaded it from (I assume you got the trial version on-line.)
