Computer takes a long time to load after chkdsk
Yesterday I had a the unfamous 0X745f2780 error and I was able to fix that. Then I scanned my computer with Spybot, Ad-Aware, McAffee and vaccinated with SpywareBlaster. I also intsalled Mozilla Firefox the day before though it didnt seem to cause any problem. Then I decided to defragment and do a chkdsk and fix the errors. The first chskdsk corrected a lot of errors on the C drive then it rebooted and started again so I decided to skip it. Then my computer froze so I resetted it and then let the chkdsk run again 2 times then it rebooted. Since then my computer takes absolutely forever to load but once it's loaded, it seems to work fine except that oddly enough, the windows XP themes have disappeared so I'm stuck with the classic ones and msn seems to be a bit wonky but it make or not be related. The system recovery wasn't activated so I guess I can't use that. The only thing I have is a SpywareBlaster snapshot which I suppose is totally useless in that case.
Any ideas what I could do to fix that? |

Re: Computer takes a long time to load after chkdsk
Okay, one possible theory is that chkdsk found some bad sectors and you lost some System data. The missing Themes might be corrected by Start>Administrative Tools>Component Services>Services>Themes>Properties and making sure that it is set for "Auto" and the service is Started.
Please report the result of this. Chkdsk does not "create" problems however it does sometimes cause them to be made "more aggravated". Simply put, you might have to do a Repair Install to fix the problem, unfortunately. Maybe running "sfc /scannow" might do the trick, but lately I'm kind of weak on this option/method and would rather do the more-reliable (but it takes longer) option of the Repair Install. You should keep running chkdsk, as sometimes HD's that have serious errors continue to degenerate into complete loss of functionality, and by monitoring the HD you can possibly get ahead of the situation and start backing up data inorder to prepare for the permanent loss of the HD. Also, it is a waste of time to attempt to fix a O/S Installation on a HD that is getting ready to die permanently. Good Luck |

Re: Computer takes a long time to load after chkdsk
Will a Repair Install erase my data and softwares?
I'm pretty good at making periodic back-ups of my data so that it isn't a problem but I suppose if I'm going to loose my data, might as well do a full format? Thank you. |

Re: Computer takes a long time to load after chkdsk
Repair install does not lose your data. It simply puts the win xp system files back in. This helps correct any system files error. The only problem i have ever had a problem with after Repair is Mcaffe as i dont think it likes something about it, possibly have the registry rebooted doesnt help, but bar that everythings safe.

Re: Computer takes a long time to load after chkdsk
No, I don't think a re-format and reinstall is necessary at this point. And Sam is correct; a Repair Install will not (at least SHOULD NOT) cause you to lose any data.
My concern is as described; chkdsk's Repair of HD has corrupted System Data, which I have heard of but not often. Which causes me to wonder how much data has been lost, and therefore how much more MAY be lost. So backing up the data is a good idea until you can say for sure if the HD is going to continue to work or not. Once you know that (meaning a couple of days of error-free chkdsk reports) THEN you can safely do the Repair Install on a HD that you know (cause you checked) is reliably error-free. |
