Startup Problem
Hi everyone, this morning my computer shut off on its own and will not start back up. When I try to turn it back on, it makes noises at the beginning that indicate it's TRYING to startup and they turn to a light humming sound, the lights come on, the monitor says "No Signal" and goes black, and that's it. I know the surge is still good, the cords are all securely plugged in, and the fans are on and spinning fine. The cd/dvd drive trays will not open. I opened it up and cleaned some dust out but I don't know what could be the problem. I'm not an expert when it comes to computers so any help at all would be greatly appreciated. It's running Windows XP Pro.

Re: Startup Problem
Sound like a hardware problem for sure. First thing I'd do is visually verify that the CPU fan is spinning. It might sound like the ALL are spinning, but if that one is out your CPU could be crisped.
Please post the manufacturer, model and other hardware specs of the computer. Could be several things, but something is definately blown-up. If I were you, I'd be hoping it's the Power Supply (and not the motherboard, CPU or both...). Also, what's the value of the machine ? Good to know this as some machines are so valueless that they are not worth repairing. And if it's "New-er", is there possibly a warranty ? |

Re: Startup Problem
May be an idea to disconnect the power source and re-seat the RAM and Graphics Card too. Also check for any bulging/leaking capacitors on the board. Be sure to ground an electro-static charge you may be carrying before touching the board.
When you post the specs as suggested by Girderman, please include the PSU details. Coincidently, are you able to test with another PSU?

Re: Startup Problem
Heck I just re-read the thread and noticed the OP is still running
Win98 My guess is that a Computer running this dinosaur isn't powered with an Intel Core Duo CPU. I also be the Power Supply is equivalent in age, so it is probably time for it to go (as well as the rest of the system). Looks like this is an example of a system that is not cost-effective to repair. Let's see if the OP comes back and confirms this .... |
