Internet Connection Randomly dropping
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help.
I'm running XP Pro SP2 on my PC and from time to time while the PC is not being used the internet connection drops and I have to reboot to get it up and running again. I've got the latest virus (norton) definitions installed and have ran several checks. I've also ran for spyware too and nothing seems to come up. My speakers were on the other day when it happened and I heard the computer beep (like when you plug in a removable storage device) and then beep again, it seems to be after this beeping that the connection drops. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this, or if there is a event logger I can look at to see if anything is registered when the beep occurs. Thanks in advance. Greg |

Re: Internet Connection Randomly dropping
I have a similar problem for which I have been searching for a solution. In fact I got to this forum in the course of my search.
I have a network with Windows 2000 server and 3 Win Xp pcs connected to it. The network is on a switch. It is connected to a Linksys wireless router, which in turn is connected to a DSL modem. The switch was installed to prevent disruption of the internal network, when Internet drops, which was happening before. In the middle of a Remote Desktop access or VPN access over the internet to this network, the Internet connection gets disrupted. The connection to the Internet can be reestablished by resetting the Linksys router, by turning the power off and then turning it on. Similar incident also happens randomly in the middle of being on the Internet from a networked PC. Once again resetting the router takes care of the problem. There is probably an explanation for this type of issue. I am still searching. Perhaps you can also try resetting the router rather than rebooting the computer. Raj |

Re: Internet Connection Randomly dropping
The connection to the internet is through Internet Explorer, using wired connections. I also use wireless connection. However after the switch was installed the wireless connection is not yet set to access the interent since the wireless network is from the router, and needs some tweaking. The DSL technitian from the phone company came and replaced the modem, hopping that it may offer the solution, whcih it did not. I believe it is a problem with configuration of the router, since resetting it as mentioned brings the internet connection back.
I will go over the steps listed in the link that you provided. I believe the network has up to date virus protection etc. The network uses AVG. The entire system is newly purchased and professionally installed. The installer is also stumped. I am trying to help him. I have tried three different internet access connections to try to reproduce the disconnect, and I have been uniformly successful. Thanks for the post. Raj |
