Windows XP Home Edition Chkdsk Error
Hi
I am curious as to why I get the following problems when using the chkdsk function in my OS (Windows XP Home). If I use the Run>chkdsk c: the check shows no errors. If I use the cmd prompt to run chkdsk c: I get the following: Correcting errors in the Bitmap Windows found problems with the file system Run CHKDSK with the /F (Fix) option to correct these I have run chkdsk c:/f from the cmd prompt and had the check/fix done on reboot which shows no errors on the disc. I have also run a chkdsk of c: using the My Computer>Propereties>Error Checking with both boxes checked to fix file errors and recover bad sectors again showing no errors on reboot. Does anyone know what might cause the persistent error messages when I run the chkdsk c: from the cmd prompt? I have not found any problems with my PC and have been able to access all files and programmes without problems.

Re: Windows XP Home Edition Chkdsk Error
I've just tried doing what you did and get more or less the same result as you, i.e. different result when run from CMD. In my case it said some files needed fixing, but at reboot it gave me the all clear. I suspect this is some curious quirk of MS, so unless anyone can come up with a better answer, I'd say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Re: Windows XP Home Edition Chkdsk Error
Hi
Thanks for the prompt response - I usually do a chkdsk from the Start Menu>Run and if any error messages appear I then use the My Computer>Propereties>Error Checking to put them right on reboot. Not something to be concerned about but curious nonetheless. Maybe someone will offer an explanation.

Re: Windows XP Home Edition Chkdsk Error
Hi
I did a browse of the Microsoft XP Forums and there are numerous posts about the unreliabilty of chkdsk in Windows, especially when using the cmd prompt from within windows. It seems that the best way is to run a chkdsk c:/r from the cmd prompt and then view the results in Event Viewer - I just did this and it showed that it had rectified several errors and the disk was clean. BTW a diagnostic check of the HDD shows no problems.
