Installed Hotfix, now Windows not loading... Please help!
Hi,
I was trying to correct the problem of the svchost.exe chewing up all of my CPU. I installed the hotfix you can get from microsoft here: http://support.microsoft.com/default...N-US%3bQ927891. I restarted my computer as ordered and now it's stuck on the Windows XP splash screen. It will load in safe mode, but not even in "last known good configuration." If someone can please tell me how I can fix this, I'd really appreciate it... I'm worried and wasting a ton of time on it. Thanks! |

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work either. It's still stalling on the splash screen. I've been waiting a few minutes now and nothing has happened. I got advice elsewhere to try a "system repair install" but I don't know that I have the correct Windows XP CD according to this tutorial: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XP...install.htm#RI. I have a sony laptop and all I have are the system recovery disks I created when I first set it up. Any thoughts? I'm very worried by this as I have most of my stuff backed up but really don't want to have to re-install everything...

Hmm, worst case scenario, you can try a registry roll back. You've tried just booting into safe-mode, does that allow you to log in?
Try running a chkdsk in recovery console. See if that solves your problem. If you can get into safemode, you'll probably just want to uninstall the hotfix. |

Resolved.
It looks like I've resolved this with some help from Sony tech support chat (no thanks Microsoft... where is your support?). Basically I ran through these steps, which I gather had to be performed in order for this to happen...
