How to install xp on a formatted drive?

After trying to solve some issues, I eventually had to format my laptop to attempt to reinstall xp. Now when I am inserting the xp disc on starting up my laptop it is not recognising it as a boot disc and consequently it will not start the installation or do anything. Any help appreciated.

is it an original copy?

is your BIOS configured to check your cd-rom drive before it checks your hard drive while booting?

It is not an original copy.

My BIOS is setup to check cd drive first. Other boot discs will work.

The disc has service pack installed and all the updates and hotfixes to Jan2k7. Is there something else that I need to add to the disc or...???
