5 hours to install XP[resolved]
I made a fresh install of XP on a Dell p4 2.6 because it took 3 days to virus scan a 40 gig hard drive. It still is running way slow. Now I am trying another install and I am currently at about 5 hours for XP install. What could be some of the possibilities here???
Thanks for any shared experiences. |

Hi shaner72...
first thing that comes to mind is failing hard drive. It may be an idea to download the hard drive manafacturer's diagnostic tool which you can use to test the integrity of the drive?? Other possibilities are faulty RAM...so you could also give memtest86 a try. Plus damaged CPU/motherboard?? If you feel confident enough, you could try removing the PC cover to check for any damage, leaking/bulging capacitors, clogged up dust etc....only do this if you know what you are looking for and have grounded yourself and removed the power source. Hope that helps :)

Hey Guys: I have solved the problem of the (not 5) but 12 hour XP install.
And survey says, "BIOS SETTING" . I found that the setting for the processor was at 'compatible' instead of 'normal'. I changed it to 'normal' and shazaam. The Dell 2.6 GHZ was running ...well like it was fresh out of the box. I do admit that I have no idea what these settings mean. Any input on this would be appreciated. Thanks for the help. |
