The problem is with the message not the OS. It should say "system file is MISSING" not "not suitable". Look in the SYSTEM32 folder for the AUTOEXEC.NT file and you will most likely find that it is not there. I found a copy in \i386 and another in \WINDOWS\REPAIR. After I copied it to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, the install worked with no problem.

You're welcome! This problem was more than likely caused by a virus. It's a favorite ruse of the virus scum to replace this file since most modern computers will no longer let them get to the boot sectors. If you ran an anti-virus or anti-spyware scan like Ad-aware or Spybot it probably removed the file when it detected an infection. Other AUTOEXEC.NT files could also be infected, so it's a good idea to run a full scan before coping the files.

Thanks again. The one thing i am finding is that the AUTOEXEC.NT file seems to dissapear every time i re-boot windows? I have also noticed that other small things keep going wrong with the pc. I have tried a full in-depth scan using norton and ad-aware6. Both come up with noting. I am now wondering if i have somehow got a virus in the sys32 file and should do an uncoditional format of my main drive. Any ideas?

The general consensus seems to be that this is a virus, most likely a parasite. Here is a link to some good info on parasites: http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/. I find that I have to use two or more cleansers to get all the bugs out. Try using Spybot along with Ad-aware.
If the file still keeps disappearing here is a trick to make it stick: once you have copied a good version to the /WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder, change the attributes to read-only and hidden. Notice that AUTOEXEC.NT is really a batch text file. You can edit it with notepad to examine the contents. Just to be safe, copy it to your desktop and rename it with a .txt extension, and then right click to edit. |
