Task Manager Problem
I recently had a power outage due to an ice storm. When the power went out something got corrupted with the Task Manager.
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP 2 OEM Compaq Presario 632MB of RAM Intel Celeron 1.80 GHz. The problem is that Users Tab is blank and on the Processes Tab, under User Name it only shows SYSTEM. All other Users are blank. Actions that I have preformed, 1. Scan disk for errors. - None Found 2. Checked Event Viewer for all errors- None found. 3. Checked for viruses with Nod32 in Safe Mode. - None Found 4. Checked for spyware in Safe Mode with Webroot SpySweeper, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D, Ewido and !! THIS IS NOT ALLOWED !!'s Windows Defender. - Only found Tracking Cookies. 5. Did a System Restore.- Didn't solve the problem. However there are NO other known problems found with my computer, it's running very well. I've search all over the web looking for a solution besides of just re-installing Windows. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks. ![]()

Hi littlebits...
please check that Terminal Services is running on your machine: - Click Start -> Run -> type: services.msc - Click OK - Scroll to Terminal Services and ensure its status is listed as 'started'. if it isn't double click it and select Start. Alternatively, make sure it is set to manual - Repeat the process for the Fast User Switching Compatibility service then reboot Hope that helps :)

Thanks but that didn't help. Both services were enabled to manual.
I changed them to automatic and then rebooted. Still no users in the task manager except for SYSTEM. Maybe related to the Terminal Services, it starts when I manually start it, but then stops. It displays a message "Terminal Services started on Local computer and then stoped, some services start and then stop if they have no work to do, for example, Performance Logs and Alerts service". However, Process Explorer displays all users correctly. And Process Viewer also displays all users correctly. This has really got me, I don't know what could cause this. Thanks. ![]()

Hi Littlebits, I think the Terminal Services failure is the key issue here so if we can get that running again, I think we'll be halfway there.
I have found a couple of registry tweaks which you may want to try. One restores the Terminal Service and the other resets Task Manager (i'm not sure this one will help at all but it's worth a go). Another thing worth trying is running the Task Manager from another profile on your machine...if you haven't got any, it's easy to set one up in Control Panel -> User Accounts or booting into Safe Mode and running it from the default administrator account. Hope that helps :)
