Reboot as if you are booting into safe mode, only this time choose "disable automatic restart"
Next time it crashes you should see a blue screen. Give us the information from this Sometimes Safe Mode is really slow to load. Give it a few minutes if you have to Last edited by DumbTerminal : 01-19-2007 at 02:22 PM. |

Hi Tom, best bet would be to start backing up stuff ASAP ;) However, you can only do that if you can boot into Windows in some form or another or if you have a specialist disk utility boot disc such as Acronis Disk Director. If none of those are applicable or available, try download the hard drive manafacturer's diagnostic utility which you should be able to make a bootable cd from in order to run some tests on the drive as it sounds like it's on the way out. In some case these problems can be rectified by repairing the disk structure but in many cases, it's the hard drives way of telling you it's about to go kaput. That's worse case scenario...you may be able to save the drive but lose the data as it may require a low level format to get things right.
Anyway, I hope you get it sorted. If we can help in any other way, don't hesitate to ask :)

Find the boot sequence or boot order, and change it to have the CD be the first boot device. Then hit Esc and it will prompt you to save. Just follow the prompts. Then boot to your recovery CD and follow the directions at petercj's link to do a repair install of Windows
EDIT: I just reread the thread If you are able to get in long enough to backup your data, I would buy a new hard drive and just start over. From the messages above, it sounds like the HD is going to die any second. Were you able to back up? If you are not able to get in, a repair install might get you in long enough to back up your data before the drive dies for good Last edited by DumbTerminal : 02-06-2007 at 09:33 AM. |

I did what you said, finally, I changed the boot sequence and hit Esc and followed prompts. It brought me back to F1 or F2. I pushed F1 and it came up to Push F1 or F2 so I pushed F2 and it brought me back to the screen to change the boot sequence and other stuff any Ideas?
Thanks Tom |

I really don't know then. If you changed the boot order to boot to CD first in the BIOS, then you should get a prompt at boot up that says "press any key to boot from cd..." Then press the space key. If this doesn't happen, then I really don't know what to tell you.
It should boot to the CD first, so you shouldn't even get to the F1/F2 prompt. That is a result of the hard drive having issues, and you just told the BIOS to see the CD ROM before the hard drive, so this is a mystery. Make absolutely certain that you changed the boot order in the BIOS. The only other thing I can think of is that your CD isn't bootable. EXACTLY what CD are you using? |

Tom, Just how old is your system ?? Ther is a posibility that you have a faulty motherboard or at least is on the edge of a major failure. No Manufacturer, even Dell, have been exempt from the dreaded swollen capacitor problem. I have repaired a couple of Dells just recently ...
If you can open up your PC, look at your motherboard and check out the capacitors .. these are tall round cylindrical cans that stand up on the board. Check to see if any are showing signs of losing the FLAT top .. Sometimes the problem is also inside the power supply unit .. ( I repaired a DELL power supply only yesterday which had no signs of board capacitor failures but in fact had 4 bad caps inside the power supply!). It would only come on in standby! there is a period of time between breaking and broke (likewith appendicitis) when the patient is poorly but you don't know why .. I suspect your PC might be at that stage. Don't open your power supply but try to find a friend with a similar PC to yours who might have a good working supply that could be tried to see if you have a power supply problem. btw, if you do ahev a friend with a PC and a little bit of know how .. you could remove your HDD and pop over to burn your photo's .. another possibilityn being to visit and internet cafe with your Disk in hand .. but make suer that the guys know what they are doing before you let them run free with it! Better to talk to a few savvy guys like TSF who will guide you through the process.
