Hello all. I'm glad that I found a forum of tech experts, and I hope that you can help me solve a pesky problem.
I'm trying to install Windows FAX accessory thru "add/remove Windows Components". My HDD is missing many files, and I cannot recover them from the installation disc. I cannot find any of them within the CAB files on the install disc. ALSO, the entire "Add Components" wizard shows incomplete and incorrect listing of installed components. The computer runs OK, albeit a little slow sometimes.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO REPAIR THE INSTALLATION USING THE INSTALL DISK, or any other means, without destroying my settings/config. The computer is 3 years old, and would be extremely difficult to reconfig with a clean reinstallation. I also have to wonder just how many files are missing/corrupted, and what effect it is having on the entire system.
I do NOT want to use "System Recovery", because too many changes have been made, over time, which would require extensive reconfig of all settings, etc.
If nobody has a fix for my problem, then here are the files that I need to install the FAX capability. If someone can please email them to me, I would greatly appreciate it:

Do you have a registered xp disk?
Repair
or try to run the system file checker, first put in your windows disk then

go to the run box on the start menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not recognized ) [ space between c and / ]

hit enter

Thanks. I have an OEM disk, which includes SP1 only. Computer built/OS installed in 1/03.
I was able to run the "file checker" just now. It crawled along,took about 15 minutes, and stopped repeatedly (I had to hit "retry" about 20 times!). When it completed, NOTHING HAPPENED (there was no message indicating success/failure). Anyway, after the check, I tried e new search for the missing files---they are STILL not present on the hard drive.

I am not able to boot into the install disk----I tried it yesterday, by changing the boot order in the BIOS.
I get a message "the version on your computer is newer than the version on installation disk". Reinstall/repair is NOT ALLOWED using the install disk?

Stumped? Computer seems to be running slower, and the HDD is working overtime (rattling/hunting).

You could try slipstreaming your copy of Windows with SP2 and make a updated disk and run off that.

Thanks Speedster and 92B. Here's what I've done so far, per both of your recommendations:

I was able to "slipstream" my OEM copy of XP SP1, with SP2, per 92b's recommended website (great info!). I then was able to install my FAX capability, and recovered all of the files listed in the previous post,above, that were missing.

I then re-ran system file checker with the new, updated install disk, but it ran the same way that it did the first time, with the old, original install disk. I do not believe that the file checker found/installed any missing files. Is it supposed to?

I then went to the BIOS, made the CDROM first boot device, and disabled second and third boot devices (HDD-0 and floppy). Tried to boot from the updated install disk, but computer STILL boots from the HDD (same as before). Is it possible that the BIOS autodetects the HDD and automatically boots from it, no matter what???? I next hit "F8" ("F3"?), and tried to boot into "safe" mode, but when the MSDOS "boot choices" screen came up, I was NOT able to move the highlight off of "Boot normally" to "Safe mode". Further, when I hit "enter" it still didn't boot. It only booted when the timer ran down to 0, and booted normally. I am not sure if the 2 problems in this paragraph are related to a BIOS issue, a boot sector issue, or an XP installation problem!

Additionally, I suspect that there are still many missing and/or corrupted files, because certain programs are not fully functional. Now that I have a bootable, updated install disk, I'd like to repair my installed OS, per the very fine website offered by Speedster.

To summarize my questions:

1. What does sfc actually do? Does it compare and repair? If not, what?
2. How can I fix my boot and "safe mode" problems?
3. Can I find/replace any missing/corrupted files without having to perform a repair-install, per the website? (I am reluctant to do this because my computer has at least 20 Windows updates/patches installed AFTER SP2 was installed about 2 years ago. Further, I would NEVER be able to replicate my current config if it was lost in the repair process )

I have a USB keyboard, but I had never enabled "USP keyboard support" in the BIOS; I have now done so. NOW, when I hit F5 or F8 (NOT F3, as stated above), and I get the "boot choices" screen, I am able to navigate the screen, and so, can now boot into safe mode (or any other choice offered). Pressing "enter" sends the desired command.
