can't open Disc Drive
In the past when I have uninstalled and cleaned out the computer completely. This problem goes away and I can open the drive by pressing the open button just once, but now I can't open the drive no matter what I do? Any suggestions. Thanks

can you eject the drive when the pc is just starting to boot? when you are in windows do you have the option to 'eject' or 'open/close tray' when you right click on the drive and if so does it open/close when you do?

I cannot eject the drive while pc is booting. I do have the option to eject but it still does not open. When the computer boots up the light blinks 4 or 5 times real fast this happens 3 times while booting up the pc.

where is that emergency eject button located? But I think my bigger concern is that why does the disc tray open without any problem when I clean out my computer and reinstall windows, so could there be a virus or someting else that might be preventing the disc tray from opening. thanks

when the drive won't open during the POST then it is not windows related. have you opened the case to make sure the molex (power) connection is in place?
the manual eject is here. you can use the end of a paper clip to eject the tray, but i only ever used this when the power is off.

Hello freedyhard, I tried to open the drive with paper clip but all I kept hitting was something solid like the plastic that the cpu is made of, but if I move the pin around a bit it went into a hole. So I could not find anything that I could hit to open the drive. Please advise me what I am looking for in particular to hit to open the drive. Also should I have the computer off or on when I try this. Thanks for the help.

Apart from the fact that you can open the drive as shown above, when you get it open take a look & see if ther is a small belt near the motor that opens & closes the sled. you might get away with a quick clean or it could be that it requires replacing. Also clean the pulleys, they aquire a film that helps make the belts slide. Use a cotton bud, also once the belt is off, you can play with the door open/close button and a cotton bud to ensure that the motor is turning. Don't do it with the belt in place.

Thanks everyone who helped.
I finally was able to open the disc drive with paper clip. If I keep the disc in the drive it opens easily, if i take it out it has to be opened from the emergency eject. So i will just keep the disc in the drive. |

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the internal mechanism .. although for the life of me I can't think why!!! It's illogical. The only difference being that when the CD is inside the mech with the laser has come up to engage in play mode. it cannot the be opened. When there is no CD the mech should be fully down and allow the tray to open when the lever is pushed or moved towards the rear. I have seen failure to open when the sled is up but never "down"
