Windows XP Professional Student Media Question
My bookstore is selling Microsoft Windows XP Professional Student Media for pretty cheap. I was wondering if this is the "complete" Windows XP. I plan on putting it on my new laptop, but I don't want a half-program, or anything that expires. Anyone have any information on this?

Hi
I've had student editions of Microsoft Office, but I didn't think that they did such versions of operating systems. The student editions that I have bought have been identical to the normal versions, and they have no expiry date or bits missing. When I bought mine, there was no CD in the box, just a form to fill in and send to Holland. The form simply asked for proof that I qualified for the student version - a signature from a college tutor or school teacher was all that was needed. A few days after sending this off, I received the CDs in the mail. The only cosmetic difference in the product is that the CD sleeves are printed in black and white, rather than colour. It seems that Microsoft are happy to do deals for students at a cut rate. Hope this helps

It is 100% the real thing.
You will not be able to use a Vista Upgrade package with it. It will require a Full Version of Vista, although Vista will have a "Student Media" version as well.

I've had two experiences-one was a microsoft box labeled student media bought from an internet retailer- it was the full version as stated on the box
the other was through the book store-my daughter said-dad install this. I don't have a clue what to do with these disks. Apparently it was volume licensed, disks labeled by year, two the same, it was confusing at best but it is full version Last edited by hwm54112; 09-01-2006 at 06:55 AM. |

The student media version is fully capable, however it is not upgradeable (as Bill stated with Vista) and the special license agreement stipulates it is for personal and educational-use only, not commercial.
