PnP Mouse drivers gone

I had put my laptop into hibernation with my basic optical mouse plugged in. When I took the computer out of hibernation, the mouse lit up but did not work. The add new hardware wizard also popped up. Now windows doesn't recognize the mouse anymore, and it doesn't show up in the control pannel or the device mamager. It did not come with a driver CD and I cannot find drivers. Any suggestions?

Try Windows Update...may have the driver you need there :-)

I have tried another PnP mouse and that didn't work either. I will try sfc and windows update

Windows Update should pick it up and offer you generic drivers for it.

I ran Windows update and sfc. Windows update didn't find anything and sfc caused it to play the failed hardware connection sound when I plug it in.

Have you tried adding the hardware manually via the add new hardware wizard...then browsing to C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\?

It is just called a Microsoft USB/PS2 Basic Optical Mouse. I also tried a Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical USB/PS2. Both have worked on this computer before. I searched for the drivers in the system32 folder because it wouldn't let me choose the drivers subdirectory and it couldn't install it.

I downloaded the file, but its a .rar, and winzip doesn't recognize it. Are there any free programs I can use to unzip it so I can install the drivers?

The program you uploaded was a control pannel applet called intelipoint. I installed it and now whenever I plug in either mouse, I get the failed hardware connection sound (three short dings).

Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just remembered, one of my recent system backups before the probem included the drivers folder in system32. Could I safely restore these files without doing any more damage?

Control Panel applet?? I know the usual 'Mouse' applet has an extra tab or 2 with those drivers but I didn't know anything about Intellipoint having its own applet. I just tried it myself...uninstalled my current mouse drivers and reinstall my old microsoft mouse and it worked a charm....no intellipoint applet either, just my standard Mouse applet with different tabs inside.

If all else fails, try using the drivers from your back up...should work...if not the problem is a bit deeper than just drivers.

Do any of the attached files help at all??

Are you sure the mouse driver isn't there, it just might not be recognising the mouse? Have you tried completely uninstalling the mouse driver in device manager and restarting to see if windows picks it up as a new device?

Hi Thematt,

What is your Pnp setting in your Bios setup menu? Do you have it set to Enabled or Disabled?

When it is set to Enabled, the Operating System configures your settings and when it is Disabled, your Bios configures your settings. For Win98, Win98se, and WinMe, it should be set to Enabled. For XP, it should be set to Disabled so your Bios sets things up.

This is a long shot but worth a try anyhow.

nickster_uk - I'm assuming those .sys fils were drivers, so I put them in the system32 drivers folder. Two were already there, but one wasn't (point32.sys). I put that one in and rebooted but nothing changed. I'm not sure where the dll file was supposed to go, mabye that would solve it. Also, I didn't replace the two drivers that were already there as I didn't want to chance making anything worse.

Munky Phil - As I said, the mouse isn't in the device manager. Only my touchpad is.

Tumbleweed36 - there isn't any option in the BIOS for PnP.

OK, I got it working. A system restore did it. I didn't think it would help, but it did.

OK, this is weird, they just dissappeared again but this time I didn't put the computer into hibernation. System restore did nothing.

Any more suggestions?
