Cry Vista boot failure due to IE 7 reocurring error

Help! I have my pc (dell tower), with pre-installed MS-Vista (meaning I have no factory OS cd's), and it's set to automatically install system upgrades. I started having problems about three weeks ago when Microsoft snuck in and installed an unauthorized copy of MS-Defender, which then started telling me that virtually every web site I tried to visit (including such mundane ones as CNN and Yahoo), were security risks and I got the red screen of death.
**********
Checking internet forums, I found that I could not uninstall this piece of crap software, but I could disable it and take it out of my start up routine (which I did).
*********
Then 3 new updates installed a couple of days ago and now I keep getting "Windows Explorer has stopped working" error messages when any user tries to sign on and once you close the program you get the black screen of death and windows itself will not restart.
*********
I've tried the administrator repair options, booting in saft mode, and just about everything else I could find, including going to an administrator command prompt under the F8 repair option and running SFC /Scannow, but while it will initiate, it will not run because it says that the repair facility is running and I first need to reboot, which of course doesn't work.
********
I have another browser loaded on my system and at this point would be happy just to be able to uninstall IE 7.0 and junk it, if I could just get rid of this problem.
*******
Right now I'd be happy just to get to my files, but without being able to bring windows up, I just don't know what to do. Can anybody help? Thanks!

A literal Red Screen of Death - RSOD - (like the infamous Blue one)?

A RSOD was limited to the intial beta versions of Vista - as far as I have ever seen.

Windows Defender comes pre-installed in Vista and Windows 7. The only updates arriving courtesy of Windows Updates are Windows Defender update definitions.

Curiosity - IE7 tells me that not all Windows Updates were in. IE8 came out some time ago and came in via Windows Updates.

How about Vista Service Pack 2?

How old is the system?

Regards. . .

Exclamation Re: Vista boot failure due to WE reocurring error

I'm very tired and frustrated, so my initial post wasn't 100% correct. It's WINDOWS Explorer that keeps crashing and preventing windows from launching, resulting in a blank black screen.
*****
My system is about 1 1/2 years old and I've never had anything like this happen before.

Thanks for the info on windows defender. It's as if though it got activated by a ghost all of a sudden, because I never saw it before in over a years use of the computer.

No problem on Explorer v. Internet Explorer - but I don't quite understand how Explorer is keeping Windows from launching.

I agree on Windows Defender - it can just 'get up and go' - especially if the Windows Malicious Software Tool Remover is by its side.

And the RSOD - when do you/ have you seen it?

Exclamation Re: Vista boot failure due to IE 7 reocurring error

What happens when I boot my Vista Dell tower is that the normal windows security sign on screen comes up, but no matter which family member logs in, the same error message comes up over and over and over again that "Windows Explorer has stopped working". The only option is to close the program, and that leaves me with a blank black screen (i.e., no icons come up on the desktop).

I've tried every user with the same result. I've tried the repair utility (but unfortunately don't have the repair disc). I've tried a full (and successful), scf scan in safe mode, but still no soap.
*****
I can't get log on to the internet even if I try to launch it manually using task manager, and I've tried launching both MS-IE as well as Opera with the same results... the box to diagnose a connection problem.
*****
The modem and router are set up fine though, because that's how I'm communicating with you now on an older laptop.
