unidentified network, no internet connection
I have just assembled a new computer.
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit OEM Asus P7P55D EVO Intel i7-860 2 x GSkill 2GB DDR3 F3-1600 ram Sapphire HD 4890 Rosewill 1000w 2 x WD 640GB HDD After a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, I installed the chipset drivers including the LAN driver which came with the motherboard from the supplied disk. I get a green light at the LAN port of the motherboard. The device driver lists the LAN port as a Realtek PCI GBE Family Controller. I am connected to a Linksys 4300 router by a 25' LAN cord which is good (confirmed the cord works). I have three other computers connected and working with the router. I had this same problem with a GA P55-UD4P. I did a fresh install of Windows 7 with no connection to the internet. I also did a fresh installed Windows XP Home w/ SP2 and could not get a connection. I'm wondering whether the P55 chip has something going on?! I have tried setting the speed of the port to 100mbps and full duplex - no help. I tried turning off Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6); no help. Strangely, neither the Gigabyte board nor this Asus P7P55D EVO board with two different OS (one at a time) are unable to connect to the internet. Thanks in advance for your helpful advice. Frustration is in control here. |

Re: unidentified network, no internet connection
Updated the BIOS from version 0209 to version 0711 which is dated 09/24/2009. Still no connection.
Seems like either the router is not compatible with the P55 motherboards, or I got two bad boards in a row from two different manufactures. More likely the router is not compatible. I posted the wrong manufacturer of the router above. It is a D-Link DGL-4300 router. Wish I had been able to edit the above posts for errors. Last edited by Mello2u; 11-06-2009 at 09:01 PM. |

Re: unidentified network, no internet connection
Windows 7, like Vista, does not require the installation of drivers in order to connect to the Internet. It will install legacy driver(s) during installation to ensure that Windows Updates get in, if so selected. This would include the installation of newer 3rd party NIC drivers.
I just installed Windows 7 x64 onto a completely wiped HDD this afternoon and did not have to install any drivers during installation nor did I have to venture out to Intel, NVIDIA, etc... sites post-install to go look for updates. Windows 7 took care of it all, including installing 8 hot-fixes and the newest Realtek Ethernet and Intel 5100 wifi NIC drivers - over 350MB total. I would suggest that you wipe the entire hard drive and re-install Windows 7 again. Use Killdisk to wipe - Re-format the HDD with KillDisk then try Vista again. KillDisk - http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm Make bootable KillDisk ISO CD w/ ImgBurn - ImgBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download I will tell you that my 1st 2 tries resulted in NO Internet connectivity whatsoever. Turned out that I had a bad Windows 7 DVD. jcgriff2 . Last edited by jcgriff2; 11-06-2009 at 10:37 PM. |

Re: unidentified network, no internet connection
What did you do to determine that you had a bad Windows 7 DVD???
Also, once you determined that how did you get another? did you have to go fork out more $$$ for a new disk? |

Re: unidentified network, no internet connection
I determined the DVD to be bad because things just did not make sense. I have installed Vista & Windows 7 hundreds of times, probably many more.
Before thinking that your Windows 7 DVD is somehow compromised, did you use the killdisk method to format the drive? jcgriff2 /. |

Re: unidentified network, no internet connection
I used KillDisk on the drive. I am doing a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit . . . . again.
I'll know if this works in a while. Thanks for your help. |

Re: unidentified network, no internet connection
Ok... good luck.
Had you used killdisk before (or similar)? |

Re: unidentified network, no internet connection
All the components for this system build were new. I used Killdisk on this drive at your suggestion after trying two clean installs of Windows 7 and Windows XP Home on each P55 board.
Still no internet connection. I even tried connecting to my cable modem to remove the router variable. So now I'm thinking that I have a bad Windows 7 DVD like you had. Except that the internet connections do not work in Windows XP Home either. I have eliminated the router, the cable; I don't think it is the OS. It would be an extreme coincidence if I have had two P55 boards from two different manufacturers with bad LAN ports on them. What are the odds that I got two bad boards with two bad LAN ports each? I just can't figure it out. This is about the 10th computer system that I have put together over the last 15 years. Last edited by Mello2u; 11-07-2009 at 12:20 AM. |

Re: unidentified network, no internet connection
I finally figured it out after sleeping. My problem has been that I had the MAC filter active on my router which blocked all MAC addresses which were not permitted!
That's what I get for letting myself get so tired I could not think straight. Thank you jcgriff2 for you help. |
