Win 7 upgrade <Retail XP Pro w/ HW changes

I really need advise / recommendations Please.

[preface] Coming from XP Pro Retail.
I've researched&read the blogs on the (possible/optional) Upgrade techniques for XP > Windows 7.
But I would like put 7 on a new Mobo, and have my original XP Pro running on it's original Mobo.

So I thought I'd clone the XP system partition (good for BU, at the least). Run the Upgrade disc on the original build, and activate Windows 7( booting into XP method; i.e. "custom install").

Then put in the new Mobo - with the Upgraded XP-to-7 disk... and (either or both) repair the installation and re-activate.

Finally, put the old Mobo and it's XP Pro disk back together for use.

Is this a licensing no-no? Apparently, the crux of MS licensing is:
"the upgrade extends the original license to the current version of the software, so you can still only have ONE instance of Windows installed on hardware."
So what I want to do is license-valid, I think?

Anyone done this, on the technical side? Advise/ explanations greatly appreciated.

Thx

Re: Win 7 upgrade <Retail XP Pro w/ HW changes

Hi -

Run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor --> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

When ready to install Windows 7, 1st wipe the entire hard drive with KillDisk, then insert the Windows 7 DVD and install it.

KillDisk - http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

Make bootable KillDisk ISO CD w/ ImgBurn -
ImgBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

It is usual practice for the XP license to be consumed by Windows 7.

Regards. . .

Thank You -

When ready to install Windows 7, 1st wipe the entire hard drive with KillDisk, then insert the Windows 7 DVD and install it.

Just to be clear; Do this with the new Mobo hooked up?

Re: Win 7 upgrade <Retail XP Pro w/ HW changes

P.S. I've run the Update advisor, and already knew that my old CPU will not handle the Aero desktop nor Virtualization, which would be most useful, going forward.
If it makes any difference. (probably not).
