Hi there.
I have really messed up my Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit install. I took an old Windows XP hard drive from a friends PC that needed some stuff backing up, and inserted in into an IDE slot on my PC. My Windows Vista install in on a hard drive connected by SATA. I then booted up using a ERD Commander disc that my friend lent me. I copied all of the files that needed backing up onto my hard disk through ERD. Took the other hard drive out, and rebooted to my normal OS. However, when I log in, the following messages appear. system32/winspool.drv - Is not designed to run on this version of windows or there is an error with the file. system32/nvcpl.dll - Is not a valid win 32 application. I get a few other errors related to software I have on the pc. Also, when I try and open an application such as Internet Explorer or Outlook, it says This version of the file is not compatible with the version of windows you are running. WHat do I need to do to fix this? Any help or suggestions would be very grateful. i'm in a right mess without it. :( Thanks in advance, Craig |

Re: Help! Really messed up my Windows Vista Install
Hi Chris -
I think that Vista saw the foreign OS and grabbed it. See if the System File Checker will help. Bring up an elevated administrative cmd/DOS prompt - START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe above under programs | select "Run as Administrator" | type: Code:
sfc /scannow Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

OK...
Do you have a recovery partition or Vista DVD if needed for a re-install? I have a feeling it will eventually turn in that direction. jcgriff2 . |

Re: Help! Really messed up my Windows Vista Install
I've got the original vista dvd yes. It was an oem version that I brought when i first built the machine.
Do you think I'm going to have to re-install then? Just doing the check now, 21% at the minute. |

Re: Help! Really messed up my Windows Vista Install
Right then, Its finished the scan I think, and it says Windows Resource Protection found some corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.log. Would it help at all if i posted the file here for you to see? |

Re: Help! Really messed up my Windows Vista Install
Hi did you look at the second option, please note the info for service packs this would stop a repair from the disc as you would have a newer os than the original disc

Re: Help! Really messed up my Windows Vista Install
Hi there.
I had a look yeah but I have sp2 for vista installed and it says it doesn't work. So... i'm just going to re-install everything I think. Gutting but the only way really. I'll never do that again with the ERD commander. I've used it before without any problems, but this time it really shafted it :( |

Hi I think you miss read the sp2 info what it means is you would need to slipstream sp2 and your vista disc to a disc then use that for the repair all the info is there on the page or is linked to the info you need to do it
