Cry chkdsk wanting to run on every startup

No matter what I do, my laptop (Dell) wants to run a chkdsk every reboot/startup.
I have:
run cccleaner
run superantispyware
run Nod32 full scan

After a reboot to Safe mode, I ran the latter 2 again.
Still, I am asked to check the disk. I have let it complete the check, then did a restart - still wanting to run it again.

I have had a "bubble" systray warning about the cmd.exe within system32 folder. I am able to run the Command Prompt OK.

Any ideas?

Re: chkdsk wanting to run on every startup

Hi try typing cmd.exe in the search just above the start then right click on the top result and choose run as administrator then type sfc /scannow (note the space between c and /) this will look for and repair any missing or corrupt files

Re: chkdsk wanting to run on every startup

There are probably bad sectors on the HDD. Go to Start/Run and type CMD and hit enter. In the Command Prompt type chkdks /f/r and hit enter. Then type a Y to run Check Disk at next boot up. Then reboot the comptuer The R switch will try and fix any bad sectors on your HDD. If it fails to finish, then it's time to get a new HDD.

Re: chkdsk wanting to run on every startup

Hi, this is most likely caused by a failure to unmount a volume when chkdsk was originally set to run, you now have what we call a "dirty" drive. There are a number of ways to fix this so here is what I do in this case:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Change the BootExecute entry from:
autocheck autochk * /.
To:
autocheck autochk *

Or else try this :
Start> Run> bring up a command prompt by typing in “CMD” (make sure it is running elevated.. ie as administrator) and type:-
Code:
fsutil dirty query c:
. Press enter. This queries the drive, and more than likely it will tell you that it is dirty. Next, type:-
Code:
CHKNTFS /X c:
. Press enter. The X tells Windows to NOT check that particular drive (c) on the next reboot. At this time, manually reboot your computer, it should not do a Chkdsk and take you directly to Windows.

Once Windows has fully loaded, bring up another CMD prompt (elevated) and now you want to do a Chkdsk manually by typing
Code:
Chkdsk /r c:
. This should take you through 5 stages of the scan and will unset that dirty bit.

BTW I am sure Spike meant chkdsk not chkdks, and the "F" is not needed it is implied with the "R".

Re: chkdsk wanting to run on every startup

I'll give this a shot, I assumed CHKDSK was meant, and this has been run. I have also run the Dell Diagnostics on F12 of bootup, and also PC-Check, booting from CD. Did extensive HD checks, leaving them running overnight, but all came back PASSED.
The scannow command would not run either.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Re: chkdsk wanting to run on every startup

Thanks Jenae, this did the trick, although the registry setting was OK and the chkdsk wouldn't run until next reboot. Rone 2 or 3 restarts now and not asked me once to check the disk.
Thanks again.
G.
