Windows Vista loads so far and stops

I have just got this machine which seems to load vista until it is about to display the login screen and stops with a black screen and a mouse pointer which moves about when the mouse is moved, it does the same in safe mode it gets to where I get the safe mode text in the corners and stops.

Tried a Vista repair but says no errors, Hirens HD Regenerate HD no errors found also a MEMtest no errors found, the only other thing thats displayed in safe mode is Documents folder but if I minimise this its just the black screen as a stated above.
System restore used from Vista install disk is also not working so I can't try that.

Is it zap and re-install time or can I repair, I know I can get any documents off machine if I install into another machine or put this drive as slave.

Can anyone help.

Regards John

Re: Windows Vista loads so far and stops

Hi if you tried to run a repair from your disc with a service pack installed it won't work you would need to try it this way http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88...all-vista.html

Re: Windows Vista loads so far and stops

Hi the service pack updates the os so your original disc is now older and the issue could be in the newer files for example

You might want to try resetting the bios to defaults. Im not sure if it will work but what have you got to lose.
