Help with Vista seeing internet connection

My daughter's laptop has a virus of some kind that I was trying to work around last night. One of the attempts I made was to start in safe mode and run a virus scan. This proved not to work but when I shut down and tried to start the machine again the computer could not log onto the internet.

The laptop is operating okay otherwise and can see my wireless router and the LAN. We have two other laptops that can log onto the internet with no problem on the same router but for some reason this machine does not see the internet connection.

I have tried going back a month or so and running the reset utility but this made no difference.

I have tried resetting the TCP/IP stack but still cannot see the internet connection.

Any thoughts?
