Laptop connected but can't load web pages

Hi there, iv been searching and searching for an answer to this query but have had no luck so far.

Basically my partners laptop had been working fine (running vista) then the other day i went to go on it, clicked on the internet (IE8) and it came up something like 'Page cannot be displayed....diagnose connection etc' so i clicked diagnose connection it ran through the process and returned that there was nothing wrong with the connection, what was also strange was windows live messenger was connected, so i knew i must have connection. Sometimes also when i try navigating to a website instead of the page cannot be displayed error i get page is unavailable. I do notice in the bottom left connor when trying to load pages, there is a flash of an error stating something about the DNS which leaves me to beleive it may be something to do with that. Since then iv been trying various different sugestions, iv flushed the dns using command prompt, iv deleted temporary internet files, iv run winsock fix iv tried using safari all to no avail. Now some inforamtion i think might be handy for you to help me, i had recent uninstalled norton anti virus (subscription had run out) and put on one called Sophos, now i did think maybe this might be causing the problem so i have uninstalled it, tried the internet and still doesnt work, but thought maybe you should know.

I beleive thats everything, i hope someone will be able to help me because i dont really want to do a whipe and reinstall, but if thats the case then fair enough.

Sorry alot of text, just trying to explain it all

Thanks

Lloyd

Re: Laptop connected but can't load web pages

Hi, thanks for your reply. When i removed norton i simply went to add/remove programs and right clicked uninstall? is that different to running their removal tool then?

I did also removed the update for internet explorer which took it back to IE7, still not joy and then it with automatic updates reupdated it to IE8 and again no joy.

Thanks

Lloyd

Did you remove your Network Updater? Check to see if you did/did not in the Device Manager list.
