Vista 64x does not install sp2

I realised that the new sp2 had been released a couple months back (dont know where i've been), but when i try to install, it gets to the final installation screen then reads- Windows update did not install - reverting to previous settings or something like that.

ive done all the troubleshooting, including- closing all apps, closing antivirus and installing the System Update Readiness Tool. but still nothing.

specs
sp1 vista premium 64
4g ram
8800gt
core duo 8400
620 realpower
