rundll32 and Win32 applications

I been having problems loading system programs in my control panel such as sound, security center, keyboard, screensaver and others. Get "rundll32.exe is not a valid win32 application."

I had my system scanned for viruses in the virus thread and they couldnt find anything and said to post it here now.

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

Running a repair should not cause you to lose anything.

Go here for instructions on how to:

Tip: See if a friend or family relative has a copy of vista you may borrow?

What service pack do you have installed?

Have you had trouble getting windows to update?....sp1?....sp2? or any other windows updates?

Re: rundll32 and Win32 applications

Do this here:

Run chkdsk:
start
search box
type: cmd
right click and run as administrator
type: chkdsk /f /r (space between k and /, space between f and /)
Type: Y press enter on keyboard
restart computer

After running chkdsk, defrag the harddrive several times until it runs fast

Now run SFC /scannow again.

Post back with the results.

Re: rundll32 and Win32 applications

ok i ran chkdsk and it said no bad sectors and everything was clean. but for some reason defrag wont load. no errors come up or nothing. i have a different program called auslogics and ran defrag through there a couple times but not sure why windows defrag wont load. and now sfc checker wont run..the cmd comes up saying verification process started then shuts off. tryed it in safemode but no luck. the cbs logs changed to todays dates but they might say the same thing.

Re: rundll32 and Win32 applications

This is suggestion here:

How would it be to reinstall windows on the computer since you have a disc?
Is that the correct windows disc you have for the windows that is installed on the computer?
Dont do it yet, just asking you a question here?
another words how much trouble would it be for you?...how much information you have saved on the harddrive?

Do you have the product key also to the computer?

Re: rundll32 and Win32 applications

was thinking about a recovery and just putting my files on an external hard drive but i dont really want to if its only the last resort. i do have the key but i dont think i would need it since the recovery is built in and wouldnt be doing a fresh install. what other system diagnostic tools are out there for my kind of problem?

It is last resort time as the others have said in this thread.

I strongly advise that you find time to do the re-install and soon. The one file from a few posts back had 640 lines in it; 619 were errors just like these -

It looks like someone/ something went into the \windows\winsxs folder and did some cleaning. There are 1,000's of files showing "missing".

I would re-install as soon as possible as hardware may be a factor here as well. A re-install may help to determine which.
