Installed Win7 after Vista crashed, now can only run in Safe Mode

I have an Acer laptop that came with Vista and crashed recently. It was upgraded to the trial version of Windows 7 64bit and has run great with no problems at all for a couple of weeks. Saturday morning I started it up and can no longer run normally. I can open up in normal mode but can't open anything and if anything does open, it takes many minutes but usually get the "not responding" message before then. I have only been able to run in Safe Mode with Networking. Could this be a driver problem? The only downloads I have done since the upgrade are Mozilla Firefox with a couple of add ons and Adobe Reader.

I have run CCleaner and the following is all that came up on it.....
Details of files deleted
Code:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Internet Explorer - Temporary Internet Files
5 KB 3 files
Internet Explorer - Index.dat files 0 KB 3 files
Windows Explorer - Thumbnail Cache 1,027 KB 6 files
Windows Explorer - Taskbar Jump Lists 4 KB 1 files
System - Temporary Files 1,950 KB 91 files
System - Windows Log Files 55 KB 5 files
Firefox/Mozilla - Cookies 0 KB 41 files
Firefox/Mozilla - Download History 2 KB 1 files
Firefox/Mozilla - Internet Cache 20,327 KB 221 files
Utilities - Windows Defender 6 KB 1 files
I tried to download and install ZoneAlarm but during set up a message comes up that says "An error occurred installing the package. Windows installer returned '1636'.

I can't run Windows Defender because it says a version already came with my computer with Vista, and it did but is no longer there and will not allow me to download another version.

I ran Avast Anitvirus and the only thing that came up is the following....
Code:
Errors:
10/17/2009 5:23:31 PM KellyAnn 736 Error in aswChestC: chestOpenList Error 1753.
10/17/2009 5:23:31 PM KellyAnn 736 aswChestInterface - Program error description: CChestListView::LoadFiles() chestOpenList() failed: 2147422219.

Warnings:

I also tried to download Driver Detector and can't run it in Safe Mode and it freezes up in Normal mode.
Also tried to run Solo Antivirus and same as above.

Thanks very much for any help you can offer.

Did the system run Vista x64 or Vista x86 previously?

This is known as an APPHANG; if the problem cannot be resolved, the app times-out, then becomes an APPCRASH (about 30 secs). The 3 symptoms...

- "Not Responding..."
- Blue circle spinning endlessly
- fading white background on IE or Windows Explorer
- Did I miss anything?

Given that you can run in SAFEMODE tells me it is probably a driver issue. I know that my Vista x64 has been updated with Firefox, although not used (IE 8 fan here!).

Then there is Adobe.... I gave up on running the Adobe Reader -- it caused constant hangs, crashes and I believe at least 1 BSOD. Why... I don't yet know.

You can easily see what installed/ un-installed & when - The Reliability Monitor -
START | type perfmon /rel | check the activity prior to the trouble starting

Also check PERFMON - Prob Rpts & Solutions
START | type wercon.exe | "View Problem History" | 2x-click on an item for additional crash/hang detail

Those commands are for Vista and may not work in Windows 7 (apologies, I don't have access to W7 at the moment). Clcik on the FLAG (bottom right of screen) and bring up the Action Center. The above s/b in there.

I would consider the fact that Zone Alarm failed during installation to be the absolute best news of the day for you. A horrible product for Vista & Windows 7 -- please, DO NOT USE ZONE ALARM !

I would ditch that product as well. The primary drivers to be concerned with - video, audio, NIC wifi & Ethernet, chipset, etc... They all can be easily found on the DirectX Kernel Diagnostic report -
START | dxdiag | save as text file

Zip it up and attach to your next post. For info, Windows 7 (& Vista for that matter) will take care of most driver updates for you - as long as there is nothing blocking its assistance like a 3rd party firewall (Z/A).

I would think based on what I have read here that you already have another firewall installed (aside from the Windows Firewall). Run msinfo32 and let me take a look -
START | msinfo32 | save as NFO file (NFO = file ext)

Add the msinfo32 NFO file to the zip file made up for dxdiag - attach to next post.

I believe if this is a driver issue, the other problems you cited like Windows Defender, inability to run a/v will disappear.

Have a nice evening, KellyAnn.

Well that's an easy fix and easily uninstalled. is there a better program???

You can easily see what installed/ un-installed & when - The Reliability Monitor -
START | type perfmon /rel | check the activity prior to the trouble starting

This brought up a whole list of "stopped running" but only 2 before the problems started.
.NET Runtime Optimization Service and
Adobe Reader 9.1...both stopped working

Also check PERFMON - Prob Rpts & Solutions
START | type wercon.exe | "View Problem History" | 2x-click on an item for additional crash/hang detail
This came up with no match to the search.

Duly Noted....should tell that to the boys (and girls) at TechSpot, of which I received no reply at all. Lucky you.

Re: Installed Win7 after Vista crashed, now can only run in Safe Mode

Hi Kellyanne -

I have gone through your files and the primary question that I have is who "upgraded" your system from Vista to WIndows 7? I ask because you are running Windows 7 RC (Release Candidiate) build 7100 - it was the final test version offered to the public.

You can use WIndows 7 RC, but I would recommend that you re-install it at this time based on the items found in the files. You installed Windows 7 RC x64 on October 6 and have suffered over 200 appcrashes since then.

Re-format the hard drive with KillDisk to assure all traces of Vista are gone, then re-install WIndows 7

KillDisk - http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

Make bootable KillDisk ISO CD w/ ImgBurn -
ImgBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
