Cursor freezes and screen goes blank randomly.

I am having a problem on my laptop with the cursor freezing and then the screen goes blank. The screen goes black but you can see that the light is still on for the computer. It isnt going in to sleep mode because i disabled it. And when it goes blank nothing works i have to hard boot it. It happens at random times.

It is a brand new, 1 day old, Gateway NV5214u.

Vista 64bit SP1

ATI Radeon 3200HD

(2) AMD Athlon x2 Dual Core QL-65

I just bought this computer day before yesterday and it was happening so i brought it back to best buy. One of the geek squad guys said it could be an overheating issue so he swapped it out for this one.
But it started happening again. I dont know if it is a hardware issue in these computers or if it is something i am doing.

And i doubt that two brand new laptops are having overheating issues. but i could be wrong.

I dont know what to do. Please help.

I'm having the exact same issue with the same model. Returned it and got a new one. Same problem. Went through things with Gateway support and they were pretty useless. Anyone know what this could be?

unistall and reinstall video drivers and check monitor cables

Did the reinstall of the video driver, it's a laptop so no monitor cable. Performed a full recovery. Updated the video driver. Adjusted the standby settings all to never and increased the hard drive idle time to 5000. Still does it.

did u run a antimalware are a antivirus did u update drivers are windows update

I got the same computer on September 21 a little over three weeks ago. So far its been a great computer and I have not experienced the black screen issue. I did read somewhere that there was a batch of defective NV52's that made their way to stores around the country. I cannot remember where I read that, but I remember thinking to myself that I was glad I got my computer when I did and not a week or two later.
