[SOLVED] Vista Freezing After Boot

Here is a quick rundown:

I have an ACER Aspire desktop (not sure on the specific model number), it is runing Windows Vista Home Basic, SP2.

Anyway, my little brother was gaming yesterday when his computer just turned off out of nowhere...no bluescreens, nothing. Just turned off and then restarted. I think he said it gave a short beep before turning off, but that could have been in game audio fading perhaps?

Anyway, it worked fine the rest of that day, but today, I find out the computer won't boot. It gets to the vista loader bar thing, sits there loading for a few minutes, and then, the first time this happened, took me to startup repair. Completed that, and the computer booted into windows ok. However...now the computer gets to a certain point in loading the various startup programs and things in Windows, and then it freezes. You cannot access the taskbar or desktop icons, because they are frozen, and you can't open task manager or anything. The mouse shows the hourglass symbol. So, I rebooted and did a System Restore to a couple days back, and experienced the same problem. Did this again for a restore point near the end of September, and still the same thing. I tried booting into last known good configuration, didn't do anything.

I CAN however, boot into Safe Mode, which works fine. I ran Memtest 86+, and it showed no errors with memory, as well as the Western Digital hard drive scanning tool off the Ultimate Boot CD, and it says there are no hard drive errors either.

I can't think of anything installed that would have caused this. No drivers were updated, and no updates were done. I haven't ran a virus scan yet, but I just did a little while ago. I'm running Avast home, Comodo firewall, winpatrol, and my computer is secured in other ways really well too. I'm thinking it might be a video card problem, but yeah, I'm not sure. I doubt its the CPU overheating. I did check the various logs and events in computer management, and there were no hardware errors, etc. reported. (This was done in Safe Mode if that makes any difference).

I'm going to try and run Ubuntu or Knoppix on it later today, but yeah, because it boots into Safe Mode, I don't think this will do much for me.

So, what do I try next?

Boot from your vista installation disk and select repair you computer. Once there select your vista partition and click next. Run startup repair and see if that fixes the problem.

Did that already man. Plus, I don't have a vista disc on hand. I have a built in Recovery Partition that Acer installs into their PCs, but that's it. And, I do NOT want to do a full system restore.

try fixboot are the mbr messed up did u try safe mode see if u could do a system restore

Nobody seems to be reading my post...Sorry.

I don't think it is the MBR, as the computer CAN BOOT...however, it freezes once you get into windows. I tried a system restore as stated in my post.

Can you boot into safe mode? Repeatedly press F8 at startup to try.

Yes. I can boot into Safe Mode. It's the only mode that doesn't freeze up, as stated in my previous post.

If not, transfer files back and forth via USB. The files included in there will provide us with more information about your system's settings, including the system event log.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for getting back to you so late as well. (It's Thanksgiving here in Canada). So anyway, I did as you requested, except, I could not generate a system health report as it gave me this error:

"An error occurred while attempting to generate the report."
"The system cannot find the path specified"

I need to have this PC running by tomorrow morning, so if it so happens that I don't get a fix by then, I will probably just use the recovery partition and start from scratch.

Update: I tried safe mode again, disabled loading startup items in msconfig, and then tried booting into normal mode again. Same problem exists.

Now, this is what I also noticed:

When I boot into normal mode, it begins to load my desktop, icons, etc. and then the computer just freezes. However, I noticed the hard drive activity indicator light on the front of the PC stays steady when it locks up. It flashes normally when booting and up until this time, but at the moment the computer locks up, the hard disk activity light just stays steadily on. I'm not sure if this helps, but yeah, its puzzling me why the computer works fine in Safe Mode, but not in normal mode.

the possible reason can be there may be fault with the hardware like ram, motherboard

Could be memory, but I am thinking that it's something to do with your PCI bus - be it the motherboard itself or the card plugged in. Is your Realtek Audio device on-board (built-in to the motherboard) or a PCI card?

And, if I remember correctly, the only PCI card I have is a wireless card that I installed only about a month ago, and it hasn't given me any problems.

After spending about an hour trying various combinations of fixes, I just decided to do a system recovery using the built in ACER partition. It only took about 5 minutes lol...but yeah, it just seemed more logical in the end.

Thank you InfalliblexOne for all your help however. If I had more time to get this PC running, I would have tried some more fixes, but I just had to have this PC operating today. Thanks again. I sincerely appreciate your time and effort.

Teletubby Registered User Join Date: Aug 2007 Posts: 89 OS: Win xp	[SOLVED] Vista Freezing After Boot Here is a quick rundown: I have an ACER Aspire desktop (not sure on the specific model number), it is runing Windows Vista Home Basic, SP2. Anyway, my little brother was gaming yesterday when his computer just turned off out of nowhere...no bluescreens, nothing. Just turned off and then restarted. I think he said it gave a short beep before turning off, but that could have been in game audio fading perhaps? Anyway, it worked fine the rest of that day, but today, I find out the computer won't boot. It gets to the vista loader bar thing, sits there loading for a few minutes, and then, the first time this happened, took me to startup repair. Completed that, and the computer booted into windows ok. However...now the computer gets to a certain point in loading the various startup programs and things in Windows, and then it freezes. You cannot access the taskbar or desktop icons, because they are frozen, and you can't open task manager or anything. The mouse shows the hourglass symbol. So, I rebooted and did a System Restore to a couple days back, and experienced the same problem. Did this again for a restore point near the end of September, and still the same thing. I tried booting into last known good configuration, didn't do anything. I CAN however, boot into Safe Mode, which works fine. I ran Memtest 86+, and it showed no errors with memory, as well as the Western Digital hard drive scanning tool off the Ultimate Boot CD, and it says there are no hard drive errors either. I can't think of anything installed that would have caused this. No drivers were updated, and no updates were done. I haven't ran a virus scan yet, but I just did a little while ago. I'm running Avast home, Comodo firewall, winpatrol, and my computer is secured in other ways really well too. I'm thinking it might be a video card problem, but yeah, I'm not sure. I doubt its the CPU overheating. I did check the various logs and events in computer management, and there were no hardware errors, etc. reported. (This was done in Safe Mode if that makes any difference). I'm going to try and run Ubuntu or Knoppix on it later today, but yeah, because it boots into Safe Mode, I don't think this will do much for me. So, what do I try next? __________________ Currently working towards A+ and MCSA certification.

Same problem exists. Now, this is what I also noticed: When I boot into normal mode, it begins to load my desktop, icons, etc. and then the computer just freezes. However, I noticed the hard drive activity indicator light on the front of the PC stays steady when it locks up. It flashes normally when booting and up until this time, but at the moment the computer locks up, the hard disk activity light just stays steadily on. I'm not sure if this helps, but yeah, its puzzling me why the computer works fine in Safe Mode, but not in normal mode. __________________ Currently working towards A+ and MCSA certification.

It only took about 5 minutes lol...but yeah, it just seemed more logical in the end. Thank you InfalliblexOne for all your help however. If I had more time to get this PC running, I would have tried some more fixes, but I just had to have this PC operating today. Thanks again.
