Why does my color change from 32 bit to 16 bit automatically?

i have a toshiba satellite l300d with 2 gigs of ram, 2.1 ghz dual core cpu and ati radeon 3100 graphics with 256 mb dedicated memory. for the past few days the "color" jsut randomly changes to 16 bit from 32 bit automatically. i play age of empires 3 the asian dynasties, but i dont have any problems with it technically, it plays fine with no problems. so im wondering wats causing the color to change to 16 bit? is it because the video card is under stress or something?

Have you updated your video driver ?
