Multiple problems following battery failure (during file transfer)

The other day I was transferring a bunch of files from a USB stick to my laptop (Acer 5920 if that helps) and the battery suddenly died during the transfer, although it had said I had half an hour left. Since this happened, I can't open picture files in photo gallery, I can't install anything, programs frequently crash, and the computer is generally running very slowly.

Does anyone know what's happened and how I can fix it? Thanks

Perform a Vista system restore. Chose a restore point prior to the trouble.
START | type rstrui

Thanks, but I just tried opening system restore and that too isn't working :(. Also, if I did that would it delete any files I've added recently? Yesterday I uploaded about 30 CDs into itunes and it would be a headache to do them again

Ah, eventually this error message came up:

"There was an unexpected error:

Class not registered (0x80040154)

Please close System Restore and try again"

Re: Multiple problems following battery failure (during file transfer)

You still have the CDs from the upload, correct?

I would suggest that you back up any & all files that you wish to retain. A Vista re-install mey be neceaasry.

Run the system file checker - SFC -
START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select run as Administrator | the black command prompt ("DOS") screen will appear | type the following:

Code:
sfc /scannow
Upon completion re-boot to allow files in use to be repaired.

SFC general info - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212

SFC & the CBS log - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228

Regards. . .

Re: Multiple problems following battery failure (during file transfer)

I get "access denied" with that and I'm definitely running as an administrator. Thanks for your help anyway, looks like I'll have to reinstall Vista like you say
