Weird Vista problem
Okay. I am going to try to explain this in the best detail possible.
So maybe 2 days ago, I was playing Starcraft, and my laptop was unplugged. I didn't know it was unplugged. As I was playing SC, my computer shut down out of nowhere, so then I turned it back on. As it rebooted and everything loaded, I saw the 5% critical battery life notice, so then I plugged it in. The profile is on high performance. Anyway, ever since then my computer has been acting weird. After I boot it up, it takes about 4 minutes to load firefox/internet explorer, but loads My Documents or My Computer pretty fast. I tried to access the task manager, but it didn't work. I also can't access the "Connect To Network" on the network icon. I used the Windows Cleaning tool (cleanmgr as the run prompt) and cleaned out a bunch of stuff, and cleaned out almost 20gb of space from recycling bin, hibernation standby files, etc. I can't figure out what's going on. I also just got a "Service Hang" report, but didn't save it because I couldn't open anything without things freezing up. Any help out there? slipp! |

Re: Weird Vista problem
Hi,
Theres a few things to try although it would have helped if you seen what process the service hang report was for. You can try a system restore to a point before the day you played starcraft and everything went nuts or re-install firefox and IE or Lastly you can go to Start - Run - Type "cmd"(without the quotations) and in the command console type "chkdsk"(without the quotations) and let it scan your drive for errors. If it asks you for a drive type c: hope this helps

I did chkdsk about ten minutes after you posted, and it's still open. It says The type of file system is NTFS and has a blank space under it, but I can't type anything in so I assume it's still doing work? I'll defrag once I figure out what's going on with chkdsk... edit: Will the autolock (when the computer locks and requires a password to get back on) interrupt a defrag? I will turn off the screen saver and then disconnect from my internet too. Last edited by slipp; 09-21-2009 at 06:41 PM. |

Re: Weird Vista problem
Hi,
chkdsk takes a wee while. Once its finished if it disappears its fine and it will tell you otherwise. Let us know how it goes.

Then that guy is a numpty lol. You should defrag at least once a month. Defrag is one of the most useful tools for speeding up someones computer. Not only does it do that, it also keeps the hard disk healthy with less chance of developing bad sectors that can corrupt your drive.
