Re: CHKDSK when bootup
If you have any data on that drive that you cherish, back it up now!
Then run diagnostics on the hard drive ( click here ) to rule out failure

Re: CHKDSK when bootup
Who knows . . but if it has data you cherish, get it backed up now. Then run the diagnostics. If it reports the drive as ok, we need to figure why the errors.
Has it been turned off unexpectedly? . . witout being shut down?

Re: CHKDSK when bootup
Hi, chkdsk is a powerful utility and can cause data loss so I agree with Simpswr, back up. I do not think the diagnostics needs to be run just yet, do this first. You are running chkdsk in "read only" mode without the parameters, it cannot complete it's task as the volume is still in use. To remedy this :-
Start, all programs, accessories and right click on command prompt select "run as administrator" type:- Code:
fsutil dirty query c: This queries the drive, and more than likely it will tell you that it is dirty. Next, type:- Code:
CHKNTFS /X c: The X tells Windows to NOT check that particular drive (c) on the next reboot. At this time, manually reboot your computer, it should not do a Chkdsk and take you directly to Windows. Once Windows has fully loaded, bring up another CMD prompt (Admin) and now you want to do a Chkdsk manually by typing:- Code:
Chkdsk /f /r c:

Re: CHKDSK when bootup
Ok, thanks everyone for your quick responses. My Asus laptop came with two harddrives but each partitioned twice, therefore i have C,D,E,F drives. Can i backup the files on the C: and other partition that corresponds to that HDD to the other one? If i would like to do this, how would i, what software should i use? Im in college and it would be tragic if i lost any data.
Thanks Again |

Re: CHKDSK when bootup
The safest way is to backup to external media . . CD, DVD or an external drive. You can juat drag and drop the files from the drive to the backup media

Re: CHKDSK when bootup
Well, i just got off the phone with my computer manufacturer ASUS and they said that the only thing i could do was basically backup and restore my computer to the default factory settings. Then i called Microsoft but since my computer was preinstalled with vista 64 from asus they want to charge me $60 for tech support. Is there an efficient removable HD that is 640Gb fast enough to backup my data effectively without a loss or corruption?
Also when i have my HD to backup my data to, how can i backup it? On the phone they mentioned a utility in vista for it. Could somebody please elaborate? To clarify things, i should backup before i run the Seagate Diagnostics, correct? |

Re: CHKDSK when bootup
You can drag and drop the files you waht to keep . . no use backing up any applications.
Any external drive that is large eonugh to hold the files will work. I would backup before doing anything else if I cherished the files
