Vista unscheduled shutdown & reboots

Dear jcgriff2,

I have a problem on my Vista computer that it would automatically shutdown & reboots. Sometimes, I wouldn't even have luck starting the computer, since it reboots itself during the loading process.

I've restored my computer using system recover to bring it back to the shape when it first came out from the manufacturer, but I still get the same blue screen & unexpected shutdown / reboot.

I've read your post on http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html and have followed all your instrustions. Would you be able to help me with solving my problem ? The files as you indicated can be found in the zip attachment.

(Note: one of the problem states that my d: is less than 15%. I cannot do anything with it, because by default, D: is the factory_image that stores the recovery data, making the drive 1.20 GB free of 8.85 GB.)

Your help is greatly appreciated !

Yours,

Andrew

Re: Vista unscheduled shutdown & reboots

You do not have Service Pack 1 installed (Service Pack 2 is recommended). Please visit the support website of the system manufacturer and update ALL of your drivers and programs. Then update to Service Pack 1 at a minimum (Service Pack 2 is recommended). Post back if this solves your issues.

The error messages vary a lot - most point to hard drive issues or networking issues (with most of them having memory related events).
Have you run any tests on your hard drive? http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html
Have you run any tests on your memory? http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html

I suspect the memory, due to the inconsistencies in some of the dump files. Please run the memory test ASAP and let us know the results.

Re: Vista unscheduled shutdown & reboots

Dear usasma,

I've took some actions and taken your advices and have performed a series of tasks, as listed below:
- formatted D:, so that now it's 99% free. (I've made recovery DVDs already so it's no use to me)
- successfully completed scan disk on C:
- successfully completed defragmenting on C:
- updated all relevent HP drivers to most recent versions
- updated vista service pack to 1, then to 2
- made a boot disc of Memtest86 v2.11 and performed memory test, successfully completed three passes in three hours
- unplugged computer, opened case and clean the inside for potential dusts. Unloaded memory from slot and reloaded it, ensured it's tight in position.

After all those, my computer successfully turned on for the first trial, no auto reboots during this time I compose this reply. I'm not sure if that's the end of the nightmare so I've done the health report again, as attached.

Are you able to tell from these files that my computer is fully healthy again ?

Thanks and Regards,

Andrew

Re: Vista unscheduled shutdown & reboots

Bad news. I've started my computer today after I came back from work. It loaded to Windows with no problem, but after 10 minutes of e-mail checking on IE, the computer rebooted...

Any ideas ?

This really leads me to believe that it is a hardware problem. A full system restore should solve most operating system problems, aside from compatibility and service packs.

Yes, as dai said, what are your specs?

If you don't know, you can check with CPU-Z, available here: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

And, is this 64-bit or 32-bit Vista?

Dear InfalliblexOne & dai,

I've installed and ran cpuid and got the following answers to the questions above :
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

Motherboard: ECS Nettle2 1.0; NVIDIA MCP61
Memory: DDR2 Dual, 3072 MBytes

Re: Vista unscheduled shutdown & reboots

My computer turned into blue screen and rebooted today...
The message specifically says:
"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

is there a strategy to fix this error ?
