I also can't create new text documents
I am running Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit.
The Problem: When I try to right click and then hover over "New," Windows Explorer crashes. I have to ctrl-alt-del and kill it, then restart explorer. I think the problem started about a week or two ago when I was fed up with not seeing a New -> Notepad or text document in the menu. So I tried to research a fix, and if I remember correctly, I might have modified a registry file. I didn't find out that it actually broke the New context menu until more recently. I would take a screenshot, but obviously can't Prnt Scr because Explorer crashes. ![]() Perhaps the New Notepad option disappeared when I installed Notepad++ many months ago (version 5.4.4). I read this thread: http://www.techsupportforum.com/micr...-document.html and I am fairly sure I followed the directions correctly from post #11. It didn't fix my problem. I also just read this announcement: http://www.techsupportforum.com/micr...-cleaners.html and should tell you that I have CCleaner (v2.14.763) installed and I'm pretty sure I have used the registry cleaner on it in the past. But hopefully that is not related to my problem. Here are some screenshots: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for the help! |

Re: I also can't create new text documents
Hi -
I 1st must ask what that key named $$PROGRAM_ID$.1.Unicode is in HKCR. Any idea? Can you open it and take a look. I am unfamiliar with it. However, I don't know all 1/2 -3/4 million + registry entries either - so it may be legit. Just curious. Also, do you have any system restore points to get you back about 2+ weeks ago? START | rstrui - 2nd screen check the box lower-left for "show restore points older than 5 days..." Regards. . . jcgriff2 . Last edited by jcgriff2; 08-24-2009 at 05:36 AM. |

Re: I also can't create new text documents
the $$PROGRAM_ID$.1.Unicode has something to do with a GIS program we use here created by a company called ESRI.
I really, really do not want to use the system restore option. Is there any way to fix this problem without doing that? |

Re: I also can't create new text documents
I am speaking of Windows System Restore - not the option that restores your system back to factory default settings causing you to lose all.
Windows System restore touches only system files and most importantly - the registry. Your personal files remain untouched. I use it at home with the kids on a daily basis sometimes. Last edited by jcgriff2; 08-24-2009 at 05:35 AM. |

Re: I also can't create new text documents
Well, unfortunately I do not have any backups. I have never used System Restore before, and when I tried rstrui, it specifically said, "No restore points have been created on your computer's system disk. To create a restore point open System Protection."
So, what next?

Re: I also can't create new text documents
Hi -
I suggest that you turn on system restore - go back into rstrui and create a restore point. Did you run sfc /scannow? Please run msinfo32 and save as NFO file - START | msinfo32 - NFO is default file ext Zip it up & attach. Regards . . jcgriff2 . |
