[SOLVED] Can't access external hard drive

Hello, I changed windows from xp to win7 and now when I try to enter to my external hard drive (which was working perfectly on win xp) I get an error "F:\ is not accessible. Access is denied." Win7 doesn't have access to that hard drive, it even can't run error-check. Any advice?

Re: Can't access external hard drive

Hello and welcome to TSF, wedegnar!

Are you the owner of the drive?

Right-click and select Properties. Select the Security tab. Click Advanced. Select the Owner tab.

Re: Can't access external hard drive

Thanks, Windy. When I open Owner it says "Current ower: Unable to display current owner." (There are 3 accounts on my pc.) And there says "change owner to: Justas (bendras-PC\Justas)" <<<That's in lithuanian. I tried changing, but it didn't work.

Re: Can't access external hard drive

What do you mean it didn't work?:

- Did you get an error?
- Did it just revert it back to it's original settings?
- It kept the setting but you still got the drive error?

Re: Can't access external hard drive

It kept the setting after reopening properties tab, but still showed that drive is unaccessible.

Tell me if you need screenshots.

Everything is ok, until step 4. There is no Upper or Lower Filters.

Re: Can't access external hard drive

Tried Type: FSUTIL DIRTY QUERY F: (where F: is the drive in question). It says I need administrative privileges. May account is administrator. Tried this on the general account, created upon installing win7, says the same.

Still can't find diagnostic tool.

PLEASE, run CMD as administator by right-clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator"

This should help bunches!

Re: Can't access external hard drive

Yes, it helped some. Here is what I get while following http://forums.techarena.in/hardware-...tm#post4131414. See attachment.

My HDD's manufacturer is Lacie, seems that they don't offer any software for diagnostics.

Re: Can't access external hard drive

The correct command is:

CHKDSK /F /R

Enter, and type Y when it gives the Y/N option. Reboot.

Plenty of files and folders. Like pictures, games, music, movies, documents, programs.
