Windows update not working.

WindowsUpdate_error 80072F8F

This is my girlfriends laptop which has Vista 32 bit on Asus.
Model# F8SN
Source Specs: ASUS F8SN

This error as I set it, is because the computer's clock is not the same as the Windows Update's server clocks. I have already done these things

-sfc/ scannow
-made sure bios clock is correct
-made clock is correct
-netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
-netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
-ipconfig /release

I'm not a expert on Windows update so and she is stressing out, so thats annoying me. lol

Re: Windows update not working.

Hello, Mcninjaguy!

I was reading about your error, and it has to do with the time, as you said in your post, so here's a few links to hopefully resolve your issue, since I've never really dabbled into the error before this point, so unfortunately my experience would be no help in this thread . . .

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...412341033.mspx

If you're still having trouble, you could always manually install them for the time being until you find the solution.

Also, what updates have you installed recently, as in - what are the latest installed? You can go to your Control Panel | System and Security | Windows Updates | and to your left, you'll see View Update History, select that, and please take either a screengrab or tell me what the latest ones are.

You could also use this link, it's faster; http://v9.update.microsoft.com/windo....aspx?ln=en-us

Do you have any proxies setup? What's your firewall? What's your anti-virus/anti-malware?

Can you still browse the Internet OK? Do you see any effects in your Internet at all?

Check out this program; http://www.emergingtechs.com/posts/h...ndows-updates/

Re: Windows update not working.

For got to mention, I already checked out that first link and tried to change the date back too. Its using NOD32, Spybot and the vista firewall. I disabled the firewall too. NO Proxies setup. The internet works perfectly.

I will get my hands on the laptop ASAP, but for now I will probably get updates tomorrow night or Saturday. ask me more question, because I tried lots

Yea that link seems good, I've got it bookmarked.

What good would you having updates do her? Just curious.

And if you're able to get updates, then what's the problem?
  1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.
  2. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
  3. If any updates are found, click Install updates. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Also, what were your last updates, as it's important to know when the you stopped successfully downloading Windows Updates.

Check out this link for the latest security update from Microsoft, I believe.

Please, go to your CMD, and type ping "http://www.microsoft.com" (without quotations) and please either post a screengrab or if you can tell yourself, report back to me.

You also mentioned 'Windows firewall', meaning.. you DO have a firewall, correct? DISABLE it, then try to Windows Update.

Why would I need to ping microsoft.com? I'll do it though. I can't do it yet. If I can download things from Microsoft which I already show anything? I'm going to try to reinstall Vista SP2 later on too.

Re: Windows update not working.

It took more time explaining why you shouldn't ping Microsoft than it would have to actually had pinged them . . .

Have you tried using that program I referred to you a few posts ago?

Re: Windows update not working.

I'm sorry but I think its just me, but you annoy me U/Windy. I think I was being unreasonable at least in my mind over the last couple posts.

That's another site bookmarked. You know what, I've been trying to get her to switch to Windows 7 and I think she might go for it since it should be fine as I kept extra CD keys handy of WIndows 7 RC and I have access to WIndows 7 RTM from MSDN and technet plus.

I will try those fixes later on today though, if I see my girlfriend tonight.

Re: Windows update not working.

I didn't mean to insult you. I was just saying that my prior posts were unduly mean, and you just quoted the wrong part. Don't take this out of context, I really aprreciate your help.

In past incidents, I think we never saw eye to eye and I kept that grudge. I mean to stop that grudge and stop stupid tiny annoyances.

Why didn't you read it the whole thing? It was an apology.

I guess I misread.

When do you think you'll get your girlfriend's laptop / she'll get her laptop?

I'm really sorry Undocked, Maybe I should be more concise first off. I was just trying to say in the past you have annoyed me but I would prefer to stop taking grudges and I was mainly apologizing for post # 5.

I will try to get the laptop tonight.

I appreciate the understanding U/WIndy.

Re: Windows update not working.

No problem, Neal. I guess I overreacted - I've been helping in Vista all night (quite literally, take a look . . .) and I'm sleep deprived.

Anyways, when the laptop comes slip me a PM and I'll be back in this thread a few seconds later, .

Hey Undocked Windy, sleep well?

Ok, so I feel that your questions are getting closer and I was being rally impatient. When I ping http//www.microsoft.com, It says it can't find the server and when I ping www.microsoft.com, it just times out. Looks like a network issue. I tripled checked the time solution and no joy with that.

I was really hoping that those manual update programs would show the newest updates but they don't.

Here are the latest updates and that secuity update worked.

Although received during Windows Updates, 80072F8F is actually a WinINet error code (Internet error code).

0x80072f8f = 12175 = ERROR_INTERNET_DECODING_FAILED =
WinINet failed to perform content decoding on the response.

From MSDN - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...55(VS.85).aspx

Windows Update log reveal clues?

If you would be so kind....

c:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log

Zip it up along with an msinfo32 NFO file and let's see!

START | msinfo32 | save in default NFO file format NFO = file ext)

Regards. . .
