Forgot PassWord,What To Do?

A friend of mine forgot her password on her acer laptop with windows vista.
She cannot get back in.

I did try a search but kept getting errors,just so you all know.

We read online one needs to download something onto a disc,but I wanted to find out if there was a battery one could remove to reset,or some key board commands to get inside.

Or whats the correct way to reset the password?

Im assuming for security reasons,they dont make it easy to do in case of theft,but any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
