Windows 7 Unidentified Network Error. Help!

Hi there.

I bought a new computer yesterday and it allready came with windows 7 build 7100.

My problem is, I had a small home network runing here but now the new computer can't connect to it or have internet access through it.

When I connect the ethernet cable directly to the modem I get internet. But when I connect it to the router I get the Unidentified Network error.

I have updated drivers and firmware

My router is a smc barricade SMCWBR14S-N2
My net connector is and asus inboard realtek GBE family controller

Please help, I've spent a whole lot of time fiddling with this with no sucess.

Thank you

Re: Windows 7 Unidentified Network Error. Help!

Do you have dhcp or static IP?
Did you try to assign a static IP to your interface?
Did you try another port on the router?
Did you try another cable?
When you log in to the router and you check your local network status do you see that the interface tried to connect?

Re: Windows 7 Unidentified Network Error. Help!

I have dhcp.

I did try to assign a static IP to my interface, with no sucess.

I have not tried this one, I'm gona try it now..... .... .... .... .... .... no sucess

No, but this cable was working with my last computer only 3 days ago. Can it be the cable? I don't have another one with me right now.

No, the router does not recognise the MAC of this computer trying to acess it.

Thank you for your answer, do you have anymore ideas? Has anyone heard of this problem?

I've been looking around google for this and it seams to be a very comum problem, even in Vista. Unfortunatly none of the solutions on the internet have worked for me, my case must be diferent in some way...

Help? Anything else you guys need to know?

Re: Windows 7 Unidentified Network Error. Help!

Another idea could be deleting the network interface and than install it new.
But it seems that Windows 7 doesn't like your router ;-)

Did you have another computer with Windows 7 or other OS connected to the router?

First of all there is nothing like a compatibility issues between Operating systems and network routers. The protocol you use is TCP/IP with is standardized. So it shouldn't matter what OS you are using. There is no router "designed for Windows". Those systems requirements are limited to the provided software.
I know that there was a tcp/ip bug with Windows 7 beta that caused blue screen while mapping network drives (like samba shares, etc). But I guess you use Windows 7 RC?

Re: Windows 7 Unidentified Network Error. Help!

Another try might be re-installing Windows 7 (maybe you have a 2nd hard drive) and go from there. First you install Windows and after that you install the Motherboard related drivers (that should also include the correct driver for the network interface in case if it's a onboard interface). Before installing everything else you try to configure your network interface.

Re: Windows 7 Unidentified Network Error. Help!

ok it seams the motherboard drivers CD doesn't run on seven. It gives and error when I try to run it "this Motherboard instalation software isn't compatible with this version of windows" which is very nice of her.

So I went to the internets to get the NIC drivers from the web and I found this page:

http://www.realtek.cz/realtek-driver.php?realtek=network

And acordingly to what it says here, I'm lucky the NIC works at all since there are no drivers to windows 7.

Should I take this into account or just download the vista version?

Re: Windows 7 Unidentified Network Error. Help!

When you go to

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...130/RTL8139B(L)

you see Realtek does not offer a Windows 7 driver. Instead you should use the driver which comes with Windows 7.
Don't use the Motherboard driver CD. Go to the CHIPSET manufacturer's website (usually nVidia, AMD or Intel) and download the newest driver from the manufacturer's website directly. They usually do offer Windows 7 driver.
