BSOD 0x124. Please Help!

Firstly these are my comp specs:

Mobo: AsRock
Penryn1600SLI-110dB
Processor: Intel QuadCore Q6600 @ 3.0GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
RAM: 2GB
HDD: 250GB WDC WD2500JB-00REA0 ATA Device
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium x64
Onboard sound driver, Realtek HD Audio
Manager.
Netgear WG111v3 wireless adapter

I have been trying to find a solution for this for about 2 months now. So far I have:

Updated all drivers
Run Memtest (no errors)
Disabled onboard nForce LAN so I am only using the wireless adapter (strangely this worked for 24hrs but stopped after 1 day)
Checked for "cracked" software (all is legit)

I have also checked for viruses, just in case, with no luck.
Also, before it is said, disabling C1E in the BIOS did not work either.

Re: BSOD 0x124. Please Help!

Yes

Because that thread had died, since I was away for a week, I thought it would be best to start it again and culminate everything that I have done so far on a different forum. I did it on this forum because I knew that you would be able to provide your input again.

Re: BSOD 0x124. Please Help!

0x124 is WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. WHEA stands for Windows Hardware Error Architecture.

Have you seen what the first parameter is after the blue screen STOP code? For example, it will say "***STOP: 0x00000124 (0x00000001 etc). The first parameter is the first one after the beginning parenthesis. It will give me an idea as to what caused the hardware failure.

I thought I could get something out of the parameter number but it seems a bit vague... http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb725851.aspx

I'll look at those minidumps now.

Edit: I can't seem to read them. My symbol file path is set correctly but it keeps saying I'm using the wrong symbols. Could you try looking at the minidumps, Usasma?

Re: BSOD 0x124. Please Help!

Wrong symbols is a common issue with beta/RC software. Microsoft doesn't update them much as there's so many changes going on. This will settle out shortly after the release (either RTM or GA - I'm unsure of which).

As you had limited success with disabling the onboard NIC through Windows - have you disabled it in the BIOS?

Could you please provide a link to the drivers that you installed for your wireless adapter?

The STOP 0x124 error is a hardware error that's generated by another component using the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (primarily the CPU). There's a serious error that hasn't tripped up Windows, but has tripped up the CPU.

There are disagreements as to the possible causes. Most folks will agree that a hardware failure can cause this. Less will agree that a compatibility issue can cause this, and still less will agree that a driver can cause this (and all reasoning behind it is valid).

I believe in all 3, but haven't been able to extract any "proof" for the last one. I'm pretty certain that compatibility issues can cause this - and this is supported by reports of the same system functioning normally with other OS's.

In this case, I'm centering on the networking components as they have the most appearances. But, a networking component can be affected by issues with the mobo - so that can't be ruled out.

I can't recall if we've tried Driver Verifier for this - but this seems to warrant it (unless the opinion that drivers can't cause STOP 0x124 errors is correct).

To do this, I'd like to try it in several stages:
- Testing only non-Microsoft drivers
- Testing only Microsoft drivers
- Testing all drivers

To do this, follow the instructions here, modifying the BOLDED step to change the drivers that are verified. Please upload the dump files as they occur, if you don't get a dump within 24 hours, switch to the next step:
Quote:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.
If that doesn't work, post back and we'll have to see about fixing the registry entry off-line.

But they aren't using beta software, it's Vista Home Premium. Unless you mean WinDbg is in beta?

My mistake, sorry Dracia! I've been doing a lot of Win7 stuff and lost sight of it being Vista. I had addressed this in my posts over at VistaX64 and had forgotten all about it.

Re: BSOD 0x124. Please Help!

Try running SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from an elevated Command Prompt. Let us know the results. I'm looking at the PSCHED.sys file as a possible cause of this.

"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

This is where I downloaded my wireless adapter driver:

Re: BSOD 0x124. Please Help!

Nope, not the problem that I though with the wireless drivers.

I'm still wondering about the PSCHED.sys issue - but don't have any ideas on how to fix it.

Are you running the Driver Verifier as described in post #9 ( BSOD 0x124. Please Help! )?

This is a minidump under driver verifier conditions. It is not a 0x124 bugcheck but a 0xC4 bugcheck.

Re: BSOD 0x124. Please Help!

This one points to crcdisk.sys as the cause.
Which stage of the Driver Verifier testing have you done? I think it's important to still do all the stages so that we can see if a pattern emerges.
Quote:
To do this, I'd like to try it in several stages:
- Testing only non-Microsoft drivers
- Testing only Microsoft drivers
- Testing all drivers
I can't recall where we're at with this - but have you run Startup Repair from the installation media? ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...torial148.html )
Have you performed a bootable hard drive diagnostic? ( http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html )

If not, please run those tests. The error is in the error checking of your disk (CRC is for Cyclic Redundancy Check).

Re: BSOD 0x124. Please Help!

I performed Startup Repair, but it did not find problems which could be repaired automatically.

I setup driver verifier to test only Microsoft drivers, but the computer crashed immediately when started normally, displaying the 0xCD bugcheck. Here is the Minidump:

No time to explain now (wife's office server just went down)- but the dump points to aswSP.SYS - a part of your Avast system protection. Please uninstall it and replace it IMMEDIATELY with another Antivirus program.
