Vista now or wait for 7 release
I am building a new system and want to take advantage of DX10 for gaming.
I dont want to make the mistake of getting Vista ultimate to find 6 months from now 7 is the way to go. Is Vista as buggy as people say, or is it just inexperianced users. I currently have xp pro. My new PC will have AMD PII 550 black edition cpu in a gigabyte 790x motherboard with 4gb ram and a Ati HD4850 512 mb graphics card.

Re: Vista now or wait for 7 release
Wait for Windows7, avoid Vista... have in mind DX11 (ATI will release some this year) .....
And how about using Windows 7 RC now (will last you for a year), while you wait for Windows 7 Release? (and probably wait for its price to drop) Vista was bad uppon release, got good enough after the SPs. But still, Windows 7 is quite better and there's no reason for Vista now. |

Re: Vista now or wait for 7 release
I have the Windows 7 RC and am not that impressed. Lots of system hangs during shutdown and restart. Could be cause older mobo. And the wireless is very intermitant vs xp. But it is the Beta maybe release version will have fixed these issues. I've just heard many gamers have moved to vista with little problems.

Re: Vista now or wait for 7 release
The life cycle of hardware and software is such that if you get the latest stuff, it's gonna be obsolete (for advanced uses) within 18 months (usually much less than).
But, for the easiest decision, purchase a computer now. Most major manufacturer's now offer a free Windows 7 upgrade if you purchase a Vista system now. If you're building, then it goes back to a cost issue - what can you afford that will last you the longest. As for Vista, I was able to run Vista on a Toshiba M45 laptop with only 512 mB of RAM and it worked fine (I was at Microsoft at the time, so I had lot's of help with that). And, I've got a Vista system sitting right next to my keyboard that's been running nearly non-stop since the RTM for Vista was released (it's the off-site backup for my wife's office). It was also my main system until the Win7 beta came out. Early Vista adopters were frustrated by the incompatibilities, and further frustrated by the "works with Windows Vista" stickers (that didn't include Vista drivers). A famous blogger whined about Vista because he couldn't use his old printer with it. That's sorta like complaining that your old tires don't fit on your brand new car. And, most of those incompatibilities had workarounds available - but were too complicated for most users to deal with. Service Pack 1 has relieved some of that, but so has Vista (because it requires different techniques when writing software). Service Pack 2 has a lot of changes also, and it seems to impact older drivers more than Service Pack 1 did.

Re: Vista now or wait for 7 release
If not the end of the world for those who have Vista, just use it. You can have a quite stable system with any OS if you know how to... well maybe not with WindowsMe. =P
If all you want is to play Dx10 games, then go for Vista since it's cheaper for you. If you think that you can wait a year to buy Windows7, then you can go for the RC now. (or if you just want to give it a try) I've mostly tested Vista and 7 under 4+ years old computers, and 7 reponds a lot better. A new system might see little to no difference, that I know not. Also, never had an issue with reboots (..yet) but I've had a bunch with "wakes ups" in 7. "Issues" like those with drivers and printers not working, will still be there of course. (it's just a "generation jump" anyway, not an issue) In a nutshell, Vista ain't bad and $50 bucks is a nice deal I think. So just $50 for the OS that can and will support your Dx10 gaming now, looks good to me. XD |

Re: Vista now or wait for 7 release
Well i wouldn't get Vista, but why wait for Win7? The RC is out now and it is free, in fact I'm using it right now! Then the official release will come out in October.
I like it better than XP personally, but it is totally your choice.

Re: Vista now or wait for 7 release
Hi, I have access to 3.1, 95, 98, 98se, 2k, Me, XP and Vista and now 7. If you need a new computer now then Usasma is correct you can go for Vista and still get an upgrade . I might advise that you wait (inside knowledge) if you can, some new stuff about to hit AND most important improved solder on MB's allowing reliability and increased performance. BTW I have an old laptop with 64 mb Ram running 2k, it is bullet proof. Put 2k on a powerful machine for word processing and internet access it is soo fast and secure.

Re: Vista now or wait for 7 release
How much does OEM cost. I'm not looking to spend more than $50. And if I get Vista I want the 32 and 64 ultimate version, is that available OEM?
