STOP code 124: BSOD!

Hey guys, I've fiddled with my computer for almost two weeks now and I really am at a stand still with my BSOD errors. Basically, here's the rundown:

I've been using Windows 7 Beta: RC version since it came out, and it's been great. However, I found that my games started to crash frequently and I started getting blue screens with various errors. I first thought it was a driver compatability issue, and I reinstalled my drivers to no avail. I then decided to go back to XP. However, I can't even install XP without it bluescreening with a PAGE_FAULT error. I get to the setup menu where it asks what drive I want to install it on, and it sees NO drives and then BSOD. I was able to install Vista Ultimate but it still frequently dies from BSOD, mainly from the stop code 124.

BCCode: 124
BCP1: 00000000
BCP2: 847B1C00
BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: 00000000

I suspected faulty RAM, so I ran memtest86 and Windows Memory Diagnostic utility and it found that there was hardware issues, I thought I found the problem so I replaced my RAM today. However, despite those tests coming back flawless now, I still get the errors. I ran a chkdsk /r on both of my hard drives and it came back clean. I'm hoping some genius that can read my minidumps will understand what the issue is. I can't afford to lose a computer!

I attached my mini-dumps in hopes that someone can help me with the issue. I suspected it might be a BIOS issue at first, but I don't really know if that's the problem. Any help is appreciated! By the way, I have like 11 minidumps in there. They all happened today. Gross :(

Thanks, Phil

Re: STOP code 124: BSOD!

I forgot to include my computer specs, d'oh.

HP Media Center PC
Model: M7490N
Pentium D 940 3.20 ghz
P5LP-LE (Emery) Motherboard, ASUS
2GB DDR2 4200 RAM (2x1GB)
2x250GB HDD SATA
nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640GB
Realtek High Definition Audio - On board
OS: Vista Ultimate (but errors happen on other MS OS's)

Once again, any help is appreciated. I'm very desperate to get this computer up and running again

Re: STOP code 124: BSOD!

A STOP 0x124 error is an error that's reported via the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA). This type of error is reported by the hardware (most likely your CPU) and doesn't conform to the normal Windows memory dump analysis techniques.

These errors are normally hardware errors - and these are the most likely causes (in this order):
- hardware failure
- hardware incompatibility
- driver corruption/incompatibility (others disagree with this)

How did you install Vista Ultimate. What sort of disk did you use? Have you installed the drivers that are required by the OS? Check Device Manager to see if there are any unknown/problem drivers.

The BSOD errors are primarily hardware, with a smattering of other errors. These are primarily memory or hard drive issues. Since the memory tests were flawless (as long as they were run for 3 or more passes), then I'd have to suspect the hard drive sub-system.

Run the steps outlined in this post to provide us with more information: http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html

Try running a bootable hard drive diagnostic. Instructions here: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html

Also, you've got numerous drivers that date back to 2006 - so I wonder if any of them could be causing this (but suspect not because XP is dated even earlier).

Then I'd suspect compatibility issues - but your system was designed by HP with either XP or Vista in mind - so that generally rules that out.

So, in the end, it's something wrong with the hardware.
- I've read of issues with MemTest86, so I'm now recommending the use of MemTest86+
Quote:
- Memtest86+
Description here: http://www.memtest.org/
Download the file from here: http://www.memtest.org/download/2.11...+-2.11.iso.zip
You must unzip the file before you can burn (NOT copy) the ISO image to a CD.
- Let us know the results of the hard drive diagnostic test also
- then it's time to start stripping parts out in order to rule them out. One of the BSOD's refers to your RealTek Audio - so that would be the first thing that I'd check out.

Here's a summary of the BSOD's (and it's followed by the large list of older drivers):

Re: STOP code 124: BSOD!

dai: My power supply is an Antec Basiq BP500U 500W. I upgraded it about a year and a half ago when I updated my video card. I'll set the IDE in the BIOS to see if XP is installable in that fashion. I've had no other hardware upgrades since then, other than the recent memory upgrade after I started having these issues.

usasma: I instaleld Windows Vista Ultimate using a retail copy I got through my school. I was able to get a copy for about $10 bucks in a license agreement my school has with Microsoft. It's a single DVD upgrade disk, but seeing as I can't even use it's upgrade feature since I can't install an earlier OS successfully, I just custom installed it onto my drive when I booted it up with the disk in my computer. I've also used this Vista version without issue for about a year now.

Question: If I disable the onboard audio (my Realtek) in the BIOS would that theoretically prevent the issue if it indeed is coming from my inboard sound? I thought I'd might do that and see if I bluescree.

I'll run the tests and report back with results.

Re: STOP code 124: BSOD!

he basiq is the worst model they put out

see if you can borrow a quality 550w 80+ to try in it

this is the min for a pcie system to run reliably

Re: STOP code 124: BSOD!

Continue to follow dai's advice about the PSU. I'm not all that familiar with the intricacies of them.

As for the audio, there's several steps that you can perform:
- disable the audio stuff in Device Manager first
- disable the audio stuff in the BIOS next
- rename the audio drivers to .BAK (last)

But it's just a guess about the Realtek audio, so don't expect miracles from it! :0)

Good luck!

Okay, I ran the bootable utility that checks my hard drives, and it came back clean on both of them. And switching the SATA mode to IDE in the BIOS solved my issue with installing XP.

So here's my next question: should I continue to diagnose the issues under my Vista build, or go back to XP (which the computer shipped with back in 2006) and see if that helps, and if not, continue diagnosing hardware?

I've attached my results from the perfmon report (HTML) along with the folder that included mini dumps that the autoruns created for me. I'll look into seeing if I can get a hold of a better PSU, but I may not be able to do that unless I buy a new one (I don't have any spare or know anyone that has one unfortunately). I also did the steps to disable my onboard audio, and I still bluescreened, so it may not be the culprit.

Thanks for the help so far!

I went ahead and restored the factory-shipped version of XP with the original hardware drivers, but I still get the error. I noticed that in the perfmon report it listed a lot of the major hardware components as "poor" or "very poor". Does anyone have any idea what that might be about?
