ntfs & scan disk @ start up

I run windows vista on a dell inspiron laptop, and when i start up my computer it does it's scan disk. About half way through the scan disk a black screen pops up and says something about ntfs and scan disk has stopped but recommends starting windows anyway, and it starts windows up. I tried doing a scan disk from control panel, and it freezes half way through, and I have to shut down the computer by the power button. Please help

Re: ntfs & scan disk @ start up

Hi, and welcome to the forums from your post I take it you can still access windows? If so go to start, all programs, accessories, and right click on command prompt select "run as administrator". At the prompt type:-

Code:
fsutil dirty query C: press enter
If it returns drive is "dirty "(even if it doesn't) at command prompt type:-

Code:
chkntfs /x c press enter
Restart computer a chkdsk will not run. Now repeat the above process for opening a command prompt as administrator and at the prompt type:-

Code:
chkdsk /r press enter
You will be told the volume is in use and do you wish to run at boot select "Y".
Reboot your computer.

Note:- This assumes your Vista install is on C drive. If you use spyware doctor or Zone Alarm both programs need to be disabled before running the chkdsk.
