continuing blue screen troubleshoot :(
Hello,
Ive posted here in the past attempting to solve a blue screen problem. It stopped for maybe 3 weeks so i thought it was resolved. But now after several reformats with vista and xp, i have determined it has to be hardware. Right now i am running a clean copy of vista with basically nothing installed. So heres the story so far. Before the most recent reformats i was getting random blue screens. The windows diagnostic reports of the dumps came up with the following problems (memory corruption, eamon.sys, ntkrpamp.exe, win32k.sys, ntfs.sys, classpnp.sys, and dxgkrnl.sys hardware.) And i dont have the dumps anymore. So i said forget it and reformatted again. I got several blue screens after the reformat while running hardrive tests, both from seagate and windows. So i was convinced it was the harddrive. I bought a new one, installed vista and got more blue screens mostly on startup. It actually froze up while in bios and on a boot menu once. Ive tried starting it up with single memory sticks, one at a time, two at a time. It would blue screen or crash sometimes, but nothing consistently, just as random as before. Ive run several memory tests before the most recent format. Ive run cpu and graphics stress tests and never got a blue screen during them. The only consistency i could find is running the chkdsk command from windows. That consistently caused blue screens for maybe 4 attempts before i decided to try the new harddrive and now it doesnt. So now im very confused and frustrated. Is there anything else you think could cause this, or anything else i can try? Im thinking maybe the power supply? This could cause the randomness of it all, and at one point the system powered down and started up again maybe 3 times over 10 seconds and on the fourth attempt it started fine. So this made it seem like maybe voltage issues? So any ideas would be much appreciated before i start buying all new parts. Thank you, James |

Re: continuing blue screen troubleshoot :(
i looked into the power supply more and nothing seems to fit. Its a 550w and my most demanding device is the 8800GTS and the combined 12v rails is 36A. So it shouldnt be underpowered. It doesnt show any symptoms of failing either. Its still possible though. My other thought was a bad RAM slot on the motherboard, but it doesnt seem consistent with the randomness of these crashes.

Re: continuing blue screen troubleshoot :(
Here's the previous posts: More blue screen errors, includes minidumps.
Here's a list from the old dumps: Quote:
If it's not the memory, then there's a lot of different things that it can be. I've found memory errors from bad hard drives and from bad NIC's. Do you recall if you had any power surges/outages around the time that this started happening? I'd suggest stripping the system down as far as you can (CPU & cooler, PSU, keyboard, hard drive, RAM, and video card) to see if it still BSOD's. If any of the other components are built into the motherboard (audio, networking, etc) - you'll have to disable them in the BIOS. If the BSOD's don't come back - then it's something that you've removed that causes it. If they do come back - then it's gotta be in the stuff that's left. Good luck!

Re: continuing blue screen troubleshoot :(
Alright i tried removing any devices i didnt need. I would still get blue screens. They almost always happen during boot up or very shortly after. and its not always a blue screen, sometimes it just freezes until i hit restart. It has frozen while in the bios and while displaying a boot menu before which makes me almost certain its hardware related. I was running on a fresh copy of vista before with nothing installed but now i have everything up to date, and still no improvement. Once the system is running it seems okay, as far as i can tell. At one point i had prime95 and furmark(gpu stress test) running together and no problems. I also ran memtest on the 2 sticks i have in it right now for a total of 10 passes with zero errors. So I think the blue screens during boot is the major symptom here. So what other than the memory and hard drive would cause this? and keep in mind its not every time. I dont have an extra PSU to try right now so thats has potential for the problem. Does a failing PSU fit these problems?
Thank you very much for the help so far, James Last edited by beamer8z8; 07-10-2009 at 02:07 PM. |

Re: continuing blue screen troubleshoot :(
I'm not real good with PSU issues, so I'd suggest posting over here for more help with that: http://www.techsupportforum.com/hard...upply-support/
Be sure to post your PSU make and wattage for them to start with. I did notice in one thread that disconnecting all extra power stuff resulted in system stability for one user. Another issue that's been popping up has been the RAM voltages, so you may want to explore that also.
