Windows Startup problem

Whenever I start up Windows, I'm having a few problems with programs starting up. I have a chat program, Trillian, and an object bar, ObjectDock, which I want to start up when I log on. I set the "Load at startup" options in both programs, hence adding them to the All Users Startup folder in the Start Menu, but when Windows Starts, two of them start up. If I move the two shortcuts from the All Users to my user's Startup folder, they both won't start up at all. And if I use MSCONFIG, two of each is displayed and unchecking one of the duplicates will make it so that the program does not start up at all. I have no idea what to do now. Please help. Thanks.

Re: Windows Startup problem

Hi -

As much I don't like recommending CCleaner, it's a decent startup manager - and very fast and quite user-friendly. It's free, also.

Just give it a try, I'd just go a head and delete "both" entries for that program, then reboot, then go back into that program and select "Load at startup".

Regards,
UW.

Re: Windows Startup problem

Hm... I tried that but it didn't work. And only one showed up in CCleaner, while there are two in MSCONFIG. I really have no idea.

Re: Windows Startup problem

Try deleting them all, even if there's one. Reboot.

Re: Windows Startup problem

I tried that but it didn't work. In Revo Uninstaller it says one is in Current Users Startup and the other is in All Users Startup. But unchecking one, like I said, will result in no startup at all.

Re: Windows Startup problem

You mean, like NO system startup or just NO startup of that startup item?

Re: Windows Startup problem

No startup of that startup item haha. And I found a thread on Google describing my problem perfectly.

http://forum.soft32.com/windows/Windows-Merged-Users-Local-User-Startup-Folder-ftopict359434.html

"My problem is like this:
Windows 'points' the All User's Startup folder to my Startup Folder.
So these things happen:

My startup programs fires up when Windows starts. All files in my Startup
Folder runs.

Windows fires up the startup items in the All Users folder. This fires up my
startup programs the second time, since Windows sees this as the All Users
folder.

The actual All Users\Programs\Startup is empty, and no program or item here
gets executed when Windows starts. MSCONFIG Startup tab display double items
(the original item in my Startup folder, and a duplicate for the All Users),
and unchecking one unchecks both. "

And I found a possible solution maybe from this site
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/...6/m/9250961985

"problemed solved. Windows copies the registry keys from CurrentUser branch to LocalMachine branch when I copied desktop.ini file from my profile to the All Users profile.

Stoopid windows. Why have the registry keys if you're only going to use ini files as the marker!? /rant"

Just I'm not sure what to make of it--is there some duplicate registry entry somewhere?

Re: Windows Startup problem

Alright, I found the solution to my problem:

http://www.somacon.com/p398.php

It's simply a conflict in the Registry concerning where to look for startup files--All Users or USER.
