So many problems I don't even know what it is anymore
Building my own computer is starting to seem like a worse and worse idea. Problems are increasing almost exponentially.
First, specs: ~HD 4870X2 ~Core i7 920 ~3x2 gigs GSKILL DDR3 (1066 I -think-) ~MSI X58 Eclipse ~PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750W (Black, Quad, I forget the order) ~Vista Home Premium 64 bit So here's the list of stuff wrong: ~BSOD - ntfs.sys ~BSOD - MEMORY_MANAGEMENT ~Pretty mucha any game that stresses the system will crash, did not resolve with a driver reinstallation ~Playing anything with Windows Media Player messed up the monitors colors/turned everything gray. This was fixed ~Sometimes playing a game won't cause it to crash, but the screen will go black. The system's still running/on, there's just no video input ~The GPU is running hotter than it used to - 78C at 70% fan ~Firefox likes to crash a lot, but that could be unrelated Is tehre ANY chance this is just a centralized problem? None of this was an issue in the past; everything just sort of popped up. |

Re: So many problems I don't even know what it is anymore
hi for the ntfs i would try sfc /scnw http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66...c-command.html
for the memory try downloading memtest86+ iso file and burn to a cd use imgburn then put in your drive and reboot and run for a min of 4 hours more would be better. is the gpu needing a fresh application of thermal paste or possibly a new fan

Re: So many problems I don't even know what it is anymore
Running sfc now.
When I tried to run memtest (not on a CD) it gave me an error about it not being able to work on vista 64. That didn't sound right, so will the problem repeat itself with an .iso? And to verify the last part: would an overheating GPU cause the black screen? I wasn't sure if it was jsut hot (I know these are -supposed- to run how) or if it was defective. |

Re: So many problems I don't even know what it is anymore
It appears that anything with a lot of video action will crash your system - that seems to point to the video card, especially when you've noticed an increase in temps on it.
Stuff happens and hardware wears out over time. It could be anything, but the vid card seems the most likely, then overheating issues in general, then memory and hard drive stuff. The Firefox crashes could be related, or they could be an entirely separate problem. We'll figure that one out once we stop the crashes. While your waiting, follow the instructions in this post to get some more information: http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html

Re: So many problems I don't even know what it is anymore
(very inconvenient time to go out of town)
Okay, first, there's two problems I forgot about originally: ~"Host Processes for Windows" and "Superfetch" have a tendency to crash. This doesn't seem to happen all the time, but it happens enough to be bothersome, and since I'm not sure exactly what these processes control, I thought they should be mentioned. ~I haven't gotten around to mounting the memtest .iso yet, but I will. ~Fallout3 no longer crashes the system, but it doesn't work, either (although this could just be the game, I know it's littered with bugs). Haven't had a chance to run other video intensive apps yet ~Firefox seems to be acting properly but that could be a coincidence. ~sfc wouldn't run properly (Windows Modules [or something along those lines] crashing), running in safe mode now. Edit: Just ran via safe mode: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". This is the same error I got when I booted normally, but there were no process crashes this time. I also followed the instructions in usasma's post, but, well, I can't upload it: Websites no longer to "interact" with computer (browse, Photbucket, etc) (yes, I'm in Safe Mode, and no, it didn't fix the above problem) This is all starting to seem like some sort of awful puzzle. Re: So many problems I don't even know what it is anymore
(editing limits)
AVG just detected a problem (invalid file structure) with NlsData0021.dll, which is a part of svchost. I'm assuming that's a bad thing, but what do I do to fix it? This should really be an edit to the above post, but I can't: L4D still crashes, so it's still a video thing, but temperatures are at more reasonable levels. AVG did find a problem (invalid file structure) in the ATI\CIM\Config folder, though. Last edited by Fewmitz; 07-06-2009 at 04:17 PM. |

Re: So many problems I don't even know what it is anymore
If AVG is finding file issues, and you're having difficulties with normal Windows operations - I'd have to suspect either a virus or a massive Windows corruption.
It's possible that a virus has taken over your AVG's reporting - so an independent scan is required. Try some of these free, online scans to see if there's something there: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/f...d-09mar08.html If you can't upload the reports, look to see if there's any files that end in .dmp listed. If there is, follow the instructions here: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/d...d-02oct08.html Then copy/paste the analysis' here for us to have a look at.
